The Argus is giving you the chance to take part in a debate on the proposed council tax rise with the city's political leaders.

We will be holding the debate at Hove Town Hall on February 6 at 7pm and you are invited to attend (arrive early to avoid disappointment).

You can find out more and take part in both our online referendum and submit questions for the party leaders for the debate below.

The Argus referendum

The Argus has launched its very own referendum on a possible council tax rise of 4.75%.

It follows the decision by Brighton and Hove City Council’s Green administration to go to the polls to decide if the increase should go ahead. The referendum is expected to take place in May – but with so much at stake The Argus does not believe we should wait that long.

So we have launched our own referendum so you can have your say on the controversial move.

The Green minority administration claims the referendum, which will cost £230,000, is needed to protect vital services.

The most the council can increase without a vote is 2% but this would need another £2 million of savings to be found.

If council tax was frozen the authority would benefit from a Government grant equivalent to a 1% increase but the Greens say it would lead to higher council tax increases in future.
