AS THE World Cup kicks off in Brazil tomorrow, a social media campaign has launched in Brighton and Hove to high-light the ugly side of the beautiful game.

The campaign aims to combat a surge in domestic violence if England loses a match. It has been launched by Purna Sen, who sits on the board of RISE, the Brighton-based domestic abuse charity and has researched violence against women, domestic violence and trafficking.

Ms Sen cited figures obtained from police forces across England under the Freedom of Information Act showing a surge in domestic violence reports during the 2010 World Cup.

She said: “Domestic violence is a year-round issue but if England loses a match, this will make it worse and we need to make it clear that’s not acceptable.

“I’m calling on perpetrators of domestic abuse to come forward and get help, and I want the victims and their families to know support is out there.”
