BRIGHTON and Hove has long had an association with squatting.

Some of the images in today’s Timeout date from the 1960s and show a number of locations you may recognise.

The main photograph is rather dramatic. It shows the aftermath of a squat at the Drill Hall, which was later the ice rink, in Queen’s Square, Brighton.

It looks like they left a real mess. How that car got there is anybody’s guess.

The photo below it of the musical protest was, we think, taken in Western Road.

“House the Homeless” reads one of the banners, “Action for Homes” says the other. The protesters look like they are putting on a bit of a show for passers-by. But do you recognise any of the group?

The photo to the left shows squatters outside a property in Hove Street, Hove.

A caption on the photograph states that the property was due to be demolished in 1986. But what is there now?

The final squatting photograph, above right, shows squatters leaving Wykeham Terrace in 1969.

Get in touch if you recognise any of those pictured.

On a completely different note, Brighton and Hove is known for its deckchairs.

During the summer months the beach is full of them.

Proper Brightonians don’t mind lying across the pebbles. But the tourists can’t hack it. So thousands upon thousands are hired out every year.

Top right shows a line of deckchairs at the bottom of West Street in Brighton.

The woman to the right of shot looks rather startled by the photographer. Do you recognise her?

The other deckchair photograph shows a line of them in Madeira Drive, Brighton.

You can make out the seafront railings to the left.

Do you recognise the lady taking a minute to rest?
