FOR a structure no-one has set foot on in decades, the West Pier has an intense hold on the collective imagination.

The slow collapse of the iconic landmark has made headlines in the city and beyond.

Recently focus has shifted on to its vertical replacement – the Brighton i360.

But with ground broken on the viewing tower the West Pier Trust is back at work considering options for a replacement.

Any scheme will be hugely expensive with more pressing priorities, such as clearing the existing wreckage.

But the trust is confident the public would back a new pier – with the i360 boosting footfall.

There have been many failed schemes in the past and this too could fade into obscurity.

But it will provide plenty of new debate on a possible reincarnation for the old relic.
