2014 will be remembered for a great many things as we take time to reflect at this time of year – for reasons both good and bad.

But one of the very positive memories will be the advancements made for equality in terms of gay marriage.

And how wonderful that Brighton and Hove has played a big part in that history.

First we had that historic spring weekend when the city held some of the first same-sex weddings in the country and now Brighton and Hove is leading the way again in the number of conversions of civil partnerships.

What a wonderful thought that people who do not even live in the city want to come here to get married because of all the connotations of tolerance and diversity that has become synonymous with who we are.

And not to mention what a boost that means for our tourism industry.

Under that spotlight, the council’s register office team must take much applause for how they have handled everything and how they have represented the city.

They will have a well-earned break this Christmas – but not for too long as there are scores more weddings planned for 2015.
