TODAY'S A-Level news is a great cause for celebration.

The youngsters who picked up their results yesterday have been working hard and aiming for the top so bow is a great time for congratulations.

They are our future leaders, scientists, engineers and sports stars and they will need all the determination they can muster to succeed and create a bright future for all of us.

The longer-term economic situation post Brexit is still unclear. What is plain to see is that their combined efforts will be crucial.

Individually the fear is that graduate jobs and apprenticeships might not be so easy to find.

They must therefore equip themselves and fill their CVs with as many useful qualifications and pieces of experience that they can.

Sadly long gone are the days of jobs for life and a realistic chance of owning our own homes.

And the landscape at school is different now with different peer group pressures.

Social media has changed so much for these young people, creating opportunities and problems too.

There are claims that exams and grades have become easier to gain.

But Hove Park School headteacher Rob Reed said him exams have got harder over the 22 years that he been teaching.

He said the idea that they have got easier is just a myth.

We must trust our fantastic teachers and he should know.

What is important is that we continue to help our youngsters and give them the chance to reach their potential.

Not waste it.

The best way to do that today is to applaud them for their successes and reassure any of those who are downbeat that there is plenty of time for them.
