THE new vice chancellor of the University of Sussex makes strong and valid comments on page 8 of The Argus today.

His remarks about the new Prime Minister and chancellor do not bode well for our universities nationally and that is important for our city too.

Whatever issues our two universities may bring, be it housing, drunkenness and any other anti-social behaviour, the benefits that the huge numbers of students bring cannot be underestimated.

They bring in vast amounts of money and they enhance the cultural offerings.

If they were not here to help fill our music venues and the like then many would struggle to survive.

And many students who come here love the city so much that they choose to remain afterwards.

After 52 per cent decided against remaining on the Brexit vote Professor Adam Tickell has joined a university with new challenges. One of the main problems is protecting the intake of foreign students which are hugely important. Then there is the EU funding. Brexit has brought some unique problems that are yet to reveal their full burden. The politicians are wavering between policies with lots of hot air about foreign workers in a misguided bid to appeal to those who voted to leave. So it is refreshing to hear words of clarity, suggesting prof Tickell will be a great asset to the university and the city alike.
