BRIGHTON and Hove’s reputation has taken a bit of a battering over the last few weeks.

First the i360’s latest breakdown hit the national news. Then we learnt that the council’s rescue bid for the seafront was in tatters.

With visitor numbers also down, it began to feel as if our city was in decline.

But yesterday was the antidote to all that negativity.

The Brighton Marathon was a spectacle to behold – with even the weather playing its part.

The city looked an absolute treat as more than 12,000 runners snaked their way past well-known sights including the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Palace Pier and the i360.

All along the route the pavements were packed with friends, families and strangers cheering on all who braved the 26.2 mile course.

Hundreds of volunteers also gave up their time to ensure everyone stayed safe and the emergency services, as ever, did their bit.

Event bosses will not know the total amount raised for some weeks but it is expected to be in the many millions. That money will go to hundreds of worthy caused around the world.

There will certainly be some sore heads and tired legs this morning. But all those who took part will have memories to last a lifetime.

As for Brighton, the city has restored some pride.

We can often be down on the place we live but nowhere quite does big public events like Brighton.

Thankfully we don’t have to wait long until the next with Festival and Fringe starting in May.

As for Brighton Marathon, roll on 2018.
