FOOTBALL can be a cruel sport.

And so it proved as Jack Grealish’s last-minute equaliser ended Albion’s dream of winning the Championship.

It had been in our hands – and we’d had multiple opportunities to wrap it up.

Perhaps the players got complacent? Maybe they were already thinking of their holidays?

Whatever it was, we will go down in the record books as finishing second in the 2016/17 season, with Newcastle champions.

However, we must not lose sight of the fact that this season has been a triumph.

Many thought we had missed our chance after coming so close last season, only to miss out on automatic promotion on the final game of the season.

But Chris Hughton has managed to galvanise the squad and has spearheaded a campaign which will go down as one of the finest in the club’s history.

If someone had said at the start of the season we would get promoted as runners up, we would have taken it.

We have a lot to look forward to over the summer.

We will be welcoming some of the biggest teams in the world and some of the best players to the Amex from August.

We will be on Match of the Day and we will get away games to the likes of Anfield and Old Trafford.

So don’t be too down about yesterday. We will soon be playing in perhaps the greatest league in the world.

Yes we had a shot at some silverware. But once the dust has settled, hopefully we will recognise that this has been a magical season, with plenty of highlights.

Now it’s full steam ahead to the Premier League.
