I would like to pay tribute to Dame Vera Lynn, who celebrated her 96th birthday on Wednesday, March 20.

Known as the Forces’ Sweetheart during the Second World War, her resonant, deeply moving voice was a great comfort to us all both here and overseas.

Her meaningful words will forever be linked with the history of our nation.

From the vibrant shores of Brighton, where all the ley lines of energy cross to the white cliffs of Dover, our heartfelt birthday greetings embrace her memorable contribution during the dark days of war which epitomised our patriotism, passion and protection of our land of hope and glory.

I am a Brightonian by birth, and send this with my love. I long to see the West Pier resurrected.
