I was saddened to come back from holiday and see the article about Brighton and Hove’s woeful recycling figures.

It is indeed a disgrace that our vibrant and lively city has such a poor record in this respect.

I was disappointed, however, that the article focussed on political point scoring rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Back in 2003 the council signed a contract for then 25, now 30, years to build and use an incinerator at Newhaven.

We were promised that having an incinerator wouldn’t impact on our ability to recycle or compost food waste.

Alas that does not seem to have been the case, so it must be time that contract was held up for public scrutiny.

As a city we should be demanding an innovative contract that truly values the resources that are put out on people’s doorsteps every week.
