I have heard many people express opinions with regards to plans to start charging for admission to certain children’s groups in the area.

When I was first told of the charges I was, like many who attend these groups, against it.

However, after giving it further thought, I realised that charges would be a better option than having some groups closed down.

After all, the charge will only apply to those who can afford it – those on a low income would be exempt – and isn’t it much more important to have these services available than for them to be free for all?

I find the people most vocally against the charges are those who would be financially able to find other means for their children to attend group activities without thought it would be those with less financial opportunity who would be left with no option but to have their ability to take part in group activities decline.

Of course, in an ideal world every children’s group would be free to all but, given the option between those who can afford to pay being charged a small amount or the alternative of some of these valuable groups being closed, I support means-based charging.

I realise that my views are contrary to those I have heard at some of these groups, but I feel it is important that all opinions are heard.
