Day trip to Dieppe

First published in Letters

I was very sorry to read the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry may be cancelled. Over the years we have had lovely day trips to the pretty town of Dieppe.

Apparently the sailing times don’t allow for day trips. Would it help if these trips could be returned and if the sailings were well advertised?

Maybe holiday makers along this part of the coast would take day trips.

I agree with you on both points.

The town of Dieppe is quite wonderful. On returning from my rides to southern Europe I always use the 5.30 am crossing which gives me a whole day to get from mid-France to the ferry.

It means that I'm in Dieppe from about 6pm, which gives me ample time to savour its delights.

In fact, despite it always being the end of a holiday, I find the Dieppe experience to be one of the highlights.

You're right about the ferry timings making a day trip less attractive. Getting into Dieppe at 4.30 am is quite ridiculous. That is the time I always go, but that ensures I can ride to beyond Bordeaux for tea-time.

Five hours at that time of the morning would be difficult to kill, but at least you'd catch the sunrise.
