'Pompey’s tower looks better than the i360'

An artist’s impression of how the i360 will look

Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower

First published in Letters

I visited Portsmouth the other day and saw at the harbour side the Spinnakar Tower for the first time and what a magnificent site it was.

Photographs fail to do justice to this fantastic structure.

The authorities in Portsmouth must be congratulated in presumably moving mountains to get it put up and I would argue that in purely visual terms a replica of the Spinnaker Tower would be much better for the City of Brighton and Hove seafront than the i360 Viewing Platform we are going to have.

It is too late to change this situation and I think Portsmouth will always out-compete us in visual terms in this respect.

Man of steel says...

I assume from your post that you did not go up the Spinnaker, that is a pity, I visited several weeks ago, and found it to be half the price of the isore, with no time limit whilst up there, and the view from the top, all around, was magnificent.
You also forgot to mention the car parking fees, it ended up cheaper for us, as a family of four, to have a day out in Portsmouth, including petrol and parking, than it would have staying in Brighton using the isore.

Often Wrong says...

I lived in Portsmouth when the spinnaker tower was being built: the locals loathed it. They absolutely detested it. No one had a good word to say about it, and it was derided and mocked as a colossal waste of money.

The spinnaker tower now works for Portsmouth and is generally approved of. I do not know if the i360 will work for Brighton, but I can guarantee whenever a big project is proposed, until it is finished and established, more people will hate it then approve of it.

But not really a very fair comparison given that I360 doesn't exist yet
