Trevor Bolton asks for specific proposals for a route for a second mainline from Brighton to London (Argus letters September 4).

I suggest he takes a look at the website of the excellent Brighton Mainline 2 Campaign at www.bml2.co.uk .

BML2 would provide a second fast route up to London by linking Brighton and Falmer to Uckfield.

It would then go to a new Croydon Gateway Station giving passengers the option of joining BML1 or continuing through a reopened Selsdon to Elmers End line into East London. It would also provide faster direct links between Sussex and Kent in the east. I have long been a supporter of opening this route to take pressure off the crowded and unreliable existing Brighton to London mainline service.

I was encouraged to read, in response to a question from another long standing supporter of BML2 – Brighton Kemptown Simon Kirby MP – that ministers are now activelyconsidering it.

The Government has shown an admirable willingness to invest heavily in transport infrastructure over the last few years, recognising the economic benefits that this brings.

Now is the perfect opportunity for them to invest in Sussex’s future by approving BML2.
