I have been reading the Argus since it was a penny a copy. These days I still buy it but in my opinion the best day is Wednesday.

This is because I enjoy reading the column by Adam Trimingham. I don’t always agree with his thoughts but I admit I usually do.

However, his piece on the Madeira Drive Terraces on May 20, was his best piece for a long time.

They were erected around the 1890s, a wonderful era for some of the most beautiful buildings erected by skilful tradesmen.

These include the famous terraces which stretch for about a half mile along Madeira Drive.

Sadly, these terraces have not been looked after by successive councils who have wasted thousands of pounds over the years, none more than these past few years by the Green Party.

I thought years ago that if the terraces were not looked after they would go the same way as our wonderful old West Pier. Why did they let the pier go as they did?

Once the pier got to a certain stage it became far too expensive to actually save it. That was a very good asset to Brighton and Hove.

I have said it many times but how much money did the Green Party spend, or waste, on other things when the terraces needed money.

Now the Green Party has lost power, let us see what Labour will do. I hope they don’t go the same route as the previous council.

They must do things beneficial to the local residents. After all it was them who put the party in power.

By the same token we want things that will make our thousands of visitors say ‘wow, that’s great’. Please start by making the terraces safe so that people can enjoy either walking or sitting on them, enjoying the fresh sea air.

Adam suggests demolishing them and rebuilding with the newest and latest materials. That does make sense. However, I would like to see the terraces brought back to safety once more.

Of course the money involved has to be considered. Money is king.

Lastly, thank you Adam for a super piece written from the heart.
