A LEAFLET was enclosed with my council tax bill for 2017-18 entitled Sussex Police Precept.
It informed me that the police portion of my bill had increased by £5 a year and this would be used to support extra officers and staff.
More community investigation teams, more expert youth teams, more armed response officers and more public protection investigators.
No mention whatsoever of more police officers patrolling our streets and shopping centres, deterring crime and antisocial behaviour.
No mention whatsoever of more police officers out apprehending drivers using their mobiles, a crime that is continually hitting the headlines.
There is a saying – he who pays the piper picks the tune – in other words, if we pay the taxes we should decide how the money is spent.
However, this clearly does not apply when it comes to policing; no matter how often and how loud the public call for more police officers out on our streets the situation will continue whereby we are lucky if we spot one in the proverbial month of Sundays.
