Lewes homecoming parade
Thousands of wellwishers lined the streets of an historic town today to cheer soldiers recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq. In stark contrast to the sombre mood of recent days when mourners gathered to pay their respects to the eight British soldiers killed within 24 hours in Afghanistan, more than 200 troops from the 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment (1 PWRR) marched through Lewes in East Sussex to the sounds of clapping and cheering. Soldiers from 1 PWRR, known as the Tigers, were the last to serve in Basra and returned at the end of May, while another contingent returned from Afghanistan earlier this year.
