MORE THAN 1,200 young voices kicked off the festive period in style yesterday. A packed house enjoyed the Schools Christmas Concert 2013, which was held at the Brighton Centre last night. A massed choir from the city’s primary, junior and special schools came together to sing seasonal and specially-written songs and join with Brighton and Hove Music and Arts ensembles and Brighton and Hove Youth Big Band. Lots of work has been going on behind the scenes for this year’s concert, and composer James Redwood, who is a former pupil of the music service, said: “This is one of my favourite projects of the year – it’s so much fun to have the excuse to write songs with groups where the theme is so totally joyful, exuberant, fantastical and uplifting. Extraordinary “These three composition groups were a delight to work with – they have been so creative, imaginative and generous, and you can totally hear that in the music we created together. “Hearing absolutely everyone in the Brighton Centre singing and playing their socks off is always extraordinary.” The concert also featured a specially-formed Wind Orchestra as well as the Brighton and Hove Youth Big Band. Classics such as Christmas Has Started, Cowboy Carol, Hibernation Song, Rise Up Shepherd, Winter Nights, Snowflakes, Melchior and Balthazar, Deck The Halls, Somewhere In My Memory and Start of Something New were all belted out at the seafront venue. The Argus Appeal team were at the event collecting donations ahead of another Christmas carol evening tonight at All Saints Church in The Drive, Hove. Brian Capron and Nicholas Owen will introduce a host of singing talent including operatic star soprano Donna-Marie Hughes. Tickets are still available by calling (01273) 747455 ext 2.
