Dunk off in derby nightmare

Ten-man Albion suffered a derby nightmare as two Glenn Murray goals helped send them to a 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

The Seagulls were up against it from the seventh minute when Lewis Dunk was sent-off.

But they had complaints over the first of two spot kicks awarded against them in the second half to add to Murray’s 38th-minute opener.

Dunk failed to cleanly control a routine pass from Bruno and, as the ball ran away from him, tripped the goalbound Yannick Bolasie just outside the box.

The defender was shown a straight red and the ten men’s disciplined rearguard action was eventually breached 31 minutes later in routine style when Murray headed home from a corner.

Albion made a bright start to the second period and almost created an immediate equaliser as Ashley Barnes robbed Wilfried Zaha and sent Craig Mackail-Smith in on goal – but his shot hit the outside of the near post.

Murray doubled his tally from a hotly disputed 54th-minute penalty as Albion claimed he dived- and queried whether he was offside - as Tomasz Kuszczak went down at his feet.

Owen Garvan added the third, also from the spot, on 71 minutes after Gordon Greer was adjudged to have impeded Murray as they waited for a cross at the far post.

To add to the Seagulls’ misery, they lost Andrea Orlandi in the first half with a broken rib.

Murray signed for Palace on 31st May 2011
Mackail-Smith signed for B&HA on 4th July 2011
Gusset stated yesterday that there was no money available to keep Murray yet within 34 days B&HA paid £2.75 Million for Mackail-Smith plus a weekly wage in excess of what Murray wanted.
Murray has a better goals per game ratio over his career than Mackail-Smith.

Its been obvious we are lacking in defensive backup for most of season (did not replace Elphick or Hall and relied on Painter who struggled last year). The striker situation has been talked about over and over again. BHA are just a bit short of being a top six team despite having top 1 support. I like CMS but he is not the striker to get us up. Its all very frustrating.

Hi, Your not going to like it but we where played off the park, even if we had kept all eleven on the park we would have struggled against a very good CP side.
We can and probably will try to blame the ref but the first decision to send off was correct and the second pen was also correct, We lost yes but we have to get up dust down and start again in the next game against Charlton.

CMS is the striker but as I have said so many times before he needs a player up top with him.
Ashley Barnes is not a Championship player and in my opinion a league 2 player. He offers nothing to the team, is too slow and always loses the ball.
I am afraid to say that Poyet is the only one that cannot see this in the whole of Brighton.

About time Gus stopped with this nonsense about how the club couldn't afford to keep Murray. The truth is he didn't think he could hack it at a higher level. Instead, he went out and spent a boatload of dosh on CMS. At the time, I thought it was good move and was ecstatic with the signing.

But, like Gus, I was wrong. Murray is by far the more clinical finisher and he keeps coming back to haunt us.

Congratulations to Palace. Sometimes I think the players become too pumped up for this particluar match - because of the fans; the result is disappointing, very disappointing - but let's just take it on the chin and move on. If you recall, last season's home defeat by Palace was followed by further poor results; I am sure that was partly caused by the sheer deflation of losing to that lot.

Totally baffled by today in every way. No recognised defender on the bench after being told we had a full compliment to choose from. Harley and Lua Lua suddenly make the bench after being know where near the squad for weeks and Hoskins and Dobbie don't get a sniff. What have they got to do to replace a very average player? We chose today to have our worst day of the season both in terms of display and discipline and to cap it all off.. A certain Mr Murray gives a master class in linking play, hold up play, off the ball running and finishing with both his head and feet. What a terrible loss he is. I'm with others in the not buying into Gm leaving for money theory, Infact I know differently. No frustrations today, just terrible disappointment in decisions that were made by those on and off the pitch. My faith in GP and my support for our club will remain constant but sometimes, just sometimes, I do wonder about some of the decisions made. Anyway UTA and let's hope this CP hoodoo ends soon.

Dunk has a donkey moment most matches - borne perhaps of arrogance - impressive looking of course most of the rest of the time. With a sending off so early on it's difficult to judge too much else. Bruno was clearly found out today. The 2nd penalty was absolutely fine. CMS should have scored. Murray would have scored the header Barnes failed to get a touch on. Our medical staff seem to be struggling again - maybe we're all just more aware when it's our own key players injured but we do seem to a) have a lot of bad luck b) take a long time to get them back - and when they are, they go via the bench for a match or three, then come back and are not match fit and below par for another 2 matches or so - the same last year. Surely a club of our size and stature can have enough decent squad defenders? We saw last year the both Painter and Calderon (much as I like him) were too slow when up against pacey wingers. Bolassie and Zaha both several miles ahead of Buckley today - both play with absolute confidence and belief - Buckley does on occasion - why not make it more often? Bad day at the office - hopefully we'll not be on a run of matches where when we hear the line up we as fans think "what a shame" before we even kick off

The gs is a wind up merchant but is spot on with this one. GP didnt like Murray and let him go, he wanted CMS and persuaded the club he was the one to get. He costs us 1/2 as much again per week as Murray would have done plus the wacking great transfer fee.

Having got him we make him play with his back to the goal which Murray could do but CMS can't and never will be able to.

We shall not be in the running this year as we don't have a manager who knows enough about what is needed to be consistent and get results week in week out. Two years on the contract after this season and then time to get someone in who is Championship hardened and knows how to be successful.

Today we were beaten by a better side, or at least by a side thta played better than we did. First penalty was a dive, the second was right IMHO. Dunk getting the red card might seem a tad harsh but what else could the ref do even if the contact was minimal.

The derby match is done so now we can get back to regular matches, all of which are just as important but don't carry that extra derby match burden.

Well done Palce, hope you lose next week, and the week after, and the week after......

Agree, men against boys today, we needed Bridge & El-abd our best two defenders out there today to stand a chance of a result. I said from the moment it looked like Murray was stalling over his contract that we needed to sort it and keep him, and if there was any doubt about that, today was the proof of what has been a dreadful error. This is a particularly bad result in so many ways. Firstly, to lose a derby so badly is unacceptabe, we were not even in the game from the start. Poor and sloppy passing and then Dunk gets sent off! I hope we do not see him again for a long time; for me, he has been unimpressive since return and this seals it. Let's face it, we were played off the park, by a far better side who are strong and can move the ball. quickly. In addition, they have a striker who is clinical and can score goals!! The team selection, once again showed no consistency and Gus obviously STILL does not know his best 11 week in week out!! We are some way off being a Play off chasing side, however a striker like Murray will give us hope if ever we get one!! Bad day indeed and I am very unhappy!

Guess what i dont like what you have said, you are wrong in so many ways it is almost as frustrating as the score.
Dubious red considering the importance of the game ,definite yellow so early on.

Where do you get the idea of football?.
with 11 on the park we would have outplayed them.
With such an early exit ,and no defender to take his place,it was ,by the book, try to make it to halftime.
When they scored ,who should of been marking him was on the bench (or did that minor point escape you).

Two pens, first a definite dive which you yourself elude to,second, totally accidental, and he made the most of it once again.
Stuff you if you honestly think ,with the players we had, against bolasie ,who when he wasn`t fouling one of our lads, was trying to claim a foul, and the most home friendly ref in years.

I ask you this, and yes it is in honesty.
19 games, and no one has beaten us by more than 1 goal. Two dubious pens and one for us waved away,a ref who in my opinion was bent like a dogs hind leg.

Truth is ,if we lose my wife knows im a miserable git till we win again, she also knows ,i say we didn`t deserve it when we dont. Today was not a fair crack, and i stand by that, even if we weren`t at our best.

Yes we all know Gus did not rate Murray, and some may forget that the £500k signing of Hoskins was announced on the day Murray left - so even on MBTS figure of £10k per week, this would have covered the first season and more if you take Hoskins' wages into account. Gus has done wonders for Albion, but he insults the fans (and the Board) by putting out stories that are blatantly false. We all make poor decisions, and I would have more respect if he held his hands-up and admitted it. Tony Bloom has backed Gus to the hilt and if Gus had wanted to keep Murray, in the same way he wanted to buy CMS, Bloom would have backed him. The likely truth is Bloom told him he could not afford both...and Gus chose CMS.

I'm glad none of the flappers on here are managing the club! Too many instant judgements after a bad result. We are better than last season (i.e. continuing to improve) and the vast majority of fans trust Gus to take us forward over the next few years.

Tug we got beat by a better team today. Ok if Dunk had not gone so early we might have done better but Palace looked so good in key areas today.

Last tuesday Gus made a couple of brave changes and we won, today he decided not to have El-Abd on the bench and whilst I don't understand that decision, he must have had a reason for doing so, I just wish he would tell us what it was.

Had El-Abd been on the bench Barnes could have come off and our back line would have retained it's shape. Would it have made any difference to the result, I doubt it but we will never know.

I still have faith in Gus and come the January window we might see some changes. Gus was very honest a few weeks back when he said that we were not yet ready for promotion, for me today proves that.

I'm playing poker this afternoon, I hope my luck is better than our team's.

ps Murray took a dive for the first penalty.

Gus Poyet has changed this club from LG1 strugglers to top half championship team in 2 and a bit seasons. He is Amazing, I know we lost today but the ref made two poor decisions. If Gus is keeping info on players fitness, that is so worrying on many levels.Too angry to make sense (theres more than a few that will agree) so just hope you take a bundle. UTA

Maybe I know someone at the club, the accounts are going to come out soon, 160 million in debt, all owed to TB, Hammond is on way more than the ten Murray is on, I know Murray is earning that because I know someone close to the board of directors at palace. Gus mislead us by stating the wage structure when in div 1' although promoted he did not mention signing a player who cost 2.5 million, cms turned down 25k a week to come here.

Sorry LA,i think CMS is finishing poorly because of our overall delivery, not because he isn`t a good striker.

Tug,

I agree mate, I think Cms has the potential to be a top man. He had 1 chance today and "yes" he missed it but its unfair to say he is not up to it. It would be very unfair to expect any striker to have a 100% strike rate. Cms just needs a bit of confidence, the right formation to help him as GP promised and a Decent strike partner to feed off.
Roll on Charlton. Uta

The reason Gus wanted CMS and wasn't bothered about losing Murray is because Gus's game plan is always to keep the ball down and pass it, and play at feet all the way to the opposition goal line.
He considered CMS to be better at that than Murray and he may be right, but what we see now is that CMS needs someone to play off of, and the ideal player for that would have been Murray, instead of the petulant Barnes.
Believe me, Gus is kicking himself now, he' ll never admit that, but everyone around him knows it.

We're all understandably upset but this is just one game and we shouldn't go.over the top!!!!

This draws close parallels with last season's match at St marys. That was also a 'derby' game which in a similar manner we failed to handle the pressure. Good old Mauricio got himself red carded and we gave away a pen and ....hmmmmmnn...lost the game 3-0! Was it the end of our season? No. Did we have it our way at the rematch? Hell yeah!

We can do the same with this game. But we DO need a striker, and Muzza ain't coming back so let's get over it!

You say you dont know why we bother wasting our time.
Listen me old fruit ,if you need to ask that question, look at our attendances, the BRIGHTON people are supporting their side.
We love our team,we wear the colours,i notice the lack of shirts for you. Is that because your tight or you dont know back from front,i ask, because i know you spelt YOUR OWN NAME WRONG ON YOUR SHIRTS .
If you knew anything about us you would know,Falmer is a suburb of BRIGHTON.

The away kit needs changing.

If you look like a pub side, you'll play like a pub side, which is what happened yesterday.

Badly organised, no discipline - all that was missing was some half time oranges and fags by the side of the pitch.

Banging on about having higher attendances and a better stadium do not compensate for being humiliated again in the big match.

I waited until today to comment as was so wound up yesterday to post ... I think we should just let the whole GM saga go away its not going to change and put it to bed for good !
Gus got it wrong ! Everybody makes mistakes ... What i cant believe was his team selection yesterday ! Hoskins ? Dobbie ? There is too much changing of players .. there needs to be more consistency ... We played rubbish !! It was awful and cringe worthy to watch on the streamed pictures. We lost all shape , couldnt pass , no movement .. i couldnt believe it was our team !
Gus needs to start sorting things out or this season will be over by January ... CMS is a great player , Gus just keeps playing him on his own !! Heaven knows why ! I would have loved to have seen Hoskins holding then playing in CMS with forward runs .. but its never going to happen ! Why oh why BARNES ... he falls over too much , his finishing is terrible .. Well we have Jake to come back soon i would like to see him given another chance .. as for the sickbay ranger Vicente , its becoming a joke to be honest .. you wowuld think his fellow countrymen would get around him and try to convince him to grow up and start playing and earning his large pay cheque !!! If he wants to leave , the best way to put yourself in the shop window is to play well !!!
I think that Gus should start to use the strengths of the players that we have , that mostly he has bought instead of trying to be Barcelona and Hove Albion ! GG

Now what did i say about Bridge weeks back lol. That vile nothing Poyet comes out with yet more lies saying he thinks he will miss one game, two tops.Im sorry people but please wake up.As soon as i got to Selhurst yesterday people that work in the game with other clubs were joking they can't believe that bald nightclub gangster Oatway is still getting a free run with the club. Now i know one of three guys that works in football & was asked to look at Grant Hall for THFC.Iv known this guy most of my life, his payed good money to look at & find young players for many clubs,& most times he gets it spot on.I asked him a long time back what do you think about Dunk.A big smile came over his face.A drunk with no pace was the reply. That boy will never play in the prem-league,plus his a vile person away from the game. Now don't have a go at me on here get out your chairs & go and asked people in the game what they really think of Poyet & his vile freeloading league one drunks. Some weeks the players are training just three days a week.Yes they can win against league one sides like Bristol city, but they should not be in he same league as that Palace side. But the sad thing is vile people like Hammond,Croft,Vicent
e,and Dobbie are all on much more money than Murray is on at Palace now.Can you please also note there was no sign of Vicente name on the back of yesterdays programme of 38 players. But they did list OatwayJr & Dickenson.

Gosport Gull is right. GP is trying to get sub standard players playing a style of football that is beyond them.
And that style calls for strikers that have a top conversion rate. BHA don't have such a striker.
GP needs to rethink otherwise another season of also rans and another embarrassment on the cards come March

SicklySeagull says...

Gus needs to sign a goalscoring striker to play alongside CMS in January then work the ball quicker to our front men then we should be quite capable of staying in the top half of the table.
At least recent results have put an end to talk of us playing in the Premiership, leave that to Fantasy Football and be content with what we have got.
