Dunk off in derby nightmare
4:59pm Saturday 1st December 2012 in Sport By Brian Owen
Ten-man Albion suffered a derby nightmare as two Glenn Murray goals helped send them to a 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
The Seagulls were up against it from the seventh minute when Lewis Dunk was sent-off.
But they had complaints over the first of two spot kicks awarded against them in the second half to add to Murray’s 38th-minute opener.
Dunk failed to cleanly control a routine pass from Bruno and, as the ball ran away from him, tripped the goalbound Yannick Bolasie just outside the box.
The defender was shown a straight red and the ten men’s disciplined rearguard action was eventually breached 31 minutes later in routine style when Murray headed home from a corner.
Albion made a bright start to the second period and almost created an immediate equaliser as Ashley Barnes robbed Wilfried Zaha and sent Craig Mackail-Smith in on goal – but his shot hit the outside of the near post.
Murray doubled his tally from a hotly disputed 54th-minute penalty as Albion claimed he dived- and queried whether he was offside - as Tomasz Kuszczak went down at his feet.
Owen Garvan added the third, also from the spot, on 71 minutes after Gordon Greer was adjudged to have impeded Murray as they waited for a cross at the far post.
To add to the Seagulls’ misery, they lost Andrea Orlandi in the first half with a broken rib.

Ashley Barnes is not a Championship player and in my opinion a league 2 player. He offers nothing to the team, is too slow and always loses the ball.
I am afraid to say that Poyet is the only one that cannot see this in the whole of Brighton.

Playing Dunk at the back is always a liability due to a lack of control and just recently his distribution has been dodgy.
Again we had chances but didn't score, acording to radio we seem certain to get a striker in Jan lets hope we are still in touch with the top six by then. I think everyone new Barnes would be back again, think he played well but he really is the managers firm favourite, despite his shortcomings.

Having got him we make him play with his back to the goal which Murray could do but CMS can't and never will be able to.
We shall not be in the running this year as we don't have a manager who knows enough about what is needed to be consistent and get results week in week out. Two years on the contract after this season and then time to get someone in who is Championship hardened and knows how to be successful.

Totally baffled by today in every way. No recognised defender on the bench after being told we had a full compliment to choose from. Harley and Lua Lua suddenly make the bench after being know where near the squad for weeks and Hoskins and Dobbie don't get a sniff. What have they got to do to replace a very average player? We chose today to have our worst day of the season both in terms of display and discipline and to cap it all off.. A certain Mr Murray gives a master class in linking play, hold up play, off the ball running and finishing with both his head and feet. What a terrible loss he is. I'm with others in the not buying into Gm leaving for money theory, Infact I know differently. No frustrations today, just terrible disappointment in decisions that were made by those on and off the pitch. My faith in GP and my support for our club will remain constant but sometimes, just sometimes, I do wonder about some of the decisions made. Anyway UTA and let's hope this CP hoodoo ends soon.

Dubious red considering the importance of the game ,definite yellow so early on.
Where do you get the idea of football?.
with 11 on the park we would have outplayed them.
With such an early exit ,and no defender to take his place,it was ,by the book, try to make it to halftime.
When they scored ,who should of been marking him was on the bench (or did that minor point escape you).
Two pens, first a definite dive which you yourself elude to,second, totally accidental, and he made the most of it once again.
Stuff you if you honestly think ,with the players we had, against bolasie ,who when he wasn`t fouling one of our lads, was trying to claim a foul, and the most home friendly ref in years.
I ask you this, and yes it is in honesty.
19 games, and no one has beaten us by more than 1 goal. Two dubious pens and one for us waved away,a ref who in my opinion was bent like a dogs hind leg.
Truth is ,if we lose my wife knows im a miserable git till we win again, she also knows ,i say we didn`t deserve it when we dont. Today was not a fair crack, and i stand by that, even if we weren`t at our best.

Gus has done wonders for Albion, but he insults the fans (and the Board) by putting out stories that are blatantly false. We all make poor decisions, and I would have more respect if he held his hands-up and admitted it. Tony Bloom has backed Gus to the hilt and if Gus had wanted to keep Murray, in the same way he wanted to buy CMS, Bloom would have backed him. The likely truth is Bloom told him he could not afford both...and Gus chose CMS.

Last tuesday Gus made a couple of brave changes and we won, today he decided not to have El-Abd on the bench and whilst I don't understand that decision, he must have had a reason for doing so, I just wish he would tell us what it was.
Had El-Abd been on the bench Barnes could have come off and our back line would have retained it's shape. Would it have made any difference to the result, I doubt it but we will never know.
I still have faith in Gus and come the January window we might see some changes. Gus was very honest a few weeks back when he said that we were not yet ready for promotion, for me today proves that.
I'm playing poker this afternoon, I hope my luck is better than our team's.

I agree mate, I think Cms has the potential to be a top man. He had 1 chance today and "yes" he missed it but its unfair to say he is not up to it. It would be very unfair to expect any striker to have a 100% strike rate. Cms just needs a bit of confidence, the right formation to help him as GP promised and a Decent strike partner to feed off.

He considered CMS to be better at that than Murray and he may be right, but what we see now is that CMS needs someone to play off of, and the ideal player for that would have been Murray, instead of the petulant Barnes.

It would be very unfair to expect any striker to have a 100% strike rate. Cms just needs a bit of confidence, the right formation to help him as GP promised and a Decent strike partner to feed off.
Roll on Charlton. Uta

I honestly can't believe why some you fans are saying it's time for gus to get in a taxi and go! Gus Poyet has changed this club from LG1 strugglers to top half championship team in 2 and a bit seasons. He is Amazing, I know we lost today but the ref made two poor decisions. CMS is a terrible finished, if I was Gus cash in on him in Jan and get a natural finisher in!! UTA!! Roll on charlton!
Sorry LA,i think CMS is finishing poorly because of our overall delivery, not because he isn`t a good striker.
Personally,i think the guy is indestructible,he works harder than any other forward i know, and when we start giving him the supply he needs ,he will destroy the tables.

This draws close parallels with last season's match at St marys. That was also a 'derby' game which in a similar manner we failed to handle the pressure. Good old Mauricio got himself red carded and we gave away a pen and ....hmmmmmnn...lost the game 3-0! Was it the end of our season? No. Did we have it our way at the rematch? Hell yeah!
We can do the same with this game. But we DO need a striker, and Muzza ain't coming back so let's get over it!

Don't know why you lot even bother wasting your time, you knew you'd get turned over today, more of the same when we visit the ashtray. Would have been put to better use as an ashtray anyway! How can you even call yourselves Brighton anyway, the club you support is in Falmer if you hadn't noticed! Mmmmmm nice away kit as well, thanks for making us all laugh.....
Listen me old fruit ,if you need to ask that question, look at our attendances, the BRIGHTON people are supporting their side.
We love our team,we wear the colours,i notice the lack of shirts for you. Is that because your tight or you dont know back from front,i ask, because i know you spelt YOUR OWN NAME WRONG ON YOUR SHIRTS .
If you knew anything about us you would know,Falmer is a suburb of BRIGHTON.
Listen tiny, the colour of our kit wont matter when we finish above you..
THE AMEX 31,000 in January...and none of it falling down,so you wont feel at home, but im told there is a landfill site nearby ,if your homesick..UTA

If you look like a pub side, you'll play like a pub side, which is what happened yesterday.
Badly organised, no discipline - all that was missing was some half time oranges and fags by the side of the pitch.
Banging on about having higher attendances and a better stadium do not compensate for being humiliated again in the big match.

Gus got it wrong ! Everybody makes mistakes ... What i cant believe was his team selection yesterday ! Hoskins ? Dobbie ? There is too much changing of players .. there needs to be more consistency ... We played rubbish !! It was awful and cringe worthy to watch on the streamed pictures. We lost all shape , couldnt pass , no movement .. i couldnt believe it was our team !
Gus needs to start sorting things out or this season will be over by January ... CMS is a great player , Gus just keeps playing him on his own !! Heaven knows why ! I would have loved to have seen Hoskins holding then playing in CMS with forward runs .. but its never going to happen ! Why oh why BARNES ... he falls over too much , his finishing is terrible .. Well we have Jake to come back soon i would like to see him given another chance .. as for the sickbay ranger Vicente , its becoming a joke to be honest .. you wowuld think his fellow countrymen would get around him and try to convince him to grow up and start playing and earning his large pay cheque !!! If he wants to leave , the best way to put yourself in the shop window is to play well !!!
I think that Gus should start to use the strengths of the players that we have , that mostly he has bought instead of trying to be Barcelona and Hove Albion ! GG

And that style calls for strikers that have a top conversion rate. BHA don't have such a striker.
GP needs to rethink otherwise another season of also rans and another embarrassment on the cards come March

what cms needs is murray upfront with him.which will never happen now,the guy shouldnt have been sold. why did dunk feel compelled to lunge in after 6 mins and get himself sent off.better to have played with 11 players from 1.0 down.bruno and calderon look liabilities when defending. the first rule of defending at schoolboy level is not to pass square across your own box.why are we still doing it and giving away goals.i told you all on here months ago we never should have let murray go and i was critisised.but actually i was right.gus isnt the great manager you make him out to be either.both him and the team are getting found out . alot of poor management decisions, time to go gus.too many crap players in and good ones released.uta

Mackail-Smith signed for B&HA on 4th July 2011
Gusset stated yesterday that there was no money available to keep Murray yet within 34 days B&HA paid £2.75 Million for Mackail-Smith plus a weekly wage in excess of what Murray wanted.
Murray has a better goals per game ratio over his career than Mackail-Smith.
