Calderon on standby for Albion

Inigo Calderon is in line to replace Bruno against Nottingham Forest Inigo Calderon is in line to replace Bruno against Nottingham Forest

Albion defender Inigo Calderon is on standby for his third home start of the season.

He will replace Bruno at right-back for Nottingham Forest’s visit to The Amex on Saturday if his fellow Spaniard is not 100% fit.

Bruno has been struggling with rib and calf problems in recent matches.

The former Valencia star went off at Charlton on Saturday with 15 minutes left, as soon as Kazenga LuaLua struck the Seagulls’ second equaliser.

Manager Gus Poyet said: “Bruno had tendonitis in his Achilles. He’s had too many problems in the last few weeks, so he hasn’t been training properly and when you are going to The Valley if you are not 100% it’s going to be difficult for you. It was getting worse so we didn’t want to risk it. We’ll see. I hope it’s a little bit of tiredness and nothing more.”

Calderon took over in the closing stages and deputised for the injured Bruno earlier in the season in home games against Birmingham and Ipswich.

Poyet will not hesitate in turning to the versatile 30-year-old if there are doubts about Bruno’s fitness.

The Uruguayan said: “Sometimes you are a little bit unfair because he (Calderon) performs and you don’t play him. I think we need to make sure the players who are going to play this week are 100% fit at the back. If not Calde has to play.”

Forest are immediately below eighth-placed Albion on goal difference.

I wonder if Greer will pass to him, or, like v Ipswich, if he'll go the whole game without using Calderon as an outlet. At least he used him twice in the Birmingham match...

Inigo Calderon, good guy and a excellent professional.
An example to all the younger players at the Amex.
Doesn't throw his toys out of the pram if he does not play. If he is on the bench,he is constantly 'warming up' with exercises and running, encouraging his teamates who are on the pitch.

Funny how we see players in a different light, Calderon was the best thing since sliced bread a year or so, now we see him slightly as a weak link when playing! Great player to have in a squad, no silly transfer requests,

I see Forster caskey can't make the starting 11 for Oxford, funny how every time we lose a game, the clamour for his returns comes out on here,
Will he make it at this level? Not sure, looking at the players who have come through, Robinson, Fraser, and ELphick all struggling once away from here.

I think we should get him back, I wouldn't be surprised that Oxford are not using him but will try and buy him in January. Wasn't it 3 games he played for us last season and and didn't he score a couple and get man of the match in two of the games? :)

Perfect summary of Calde's contribution to the Albion cause. Despite the fact that he is less involved these days he must go down as one of Gus's best signings.

Totally agree with these two posts. For me Calde is the model pro. If he does play Saturday I have no concerns about it weakening the side at all. In actual fact I dont feel Bruno has been quite on his game of late, which is very likely to be down to the niggles he has. One thing I have noticed with Bruno lately especially on several occasions at Charlton was how he seems to pull out of seriously challenging for headers. He turns his back half the time and appears to hope the other player misses it. Any thoughts?

Rib problems could be the cause for the turning of his back when jumping, offers protection to that area.

Calde, as other have rightly said, a perfect pro.

JFC, probably needs to come home to continue his education, maybe, with all due respect to Oxford, it was a step too low for him. The lad can only play the system that Oxford adopt and if that is a tad route one then he will not progress.

Tough one to call IMHO, Bruno or Calde as far as who is better. In all honesty I think we are blessed with two players of equal quality but each of them has strong points to their game.
Our lack of arial ability is very true and worrying to some degree. Defensive heading is one thing, a defender usualy wins out but it's when we look for goals from set pieces I get so frustrated.

Some would say that we MUST get a striker, others want a striker/hold up player. There is also the center back issue. Should we strengthen at the back to stop goals conceded or should we go the other way and try to score more?

Does a 1-0 win not mean the same as a 2-1 win, it's three points. I am torn on this one.

We do need a strong hold up player. I've been really impressed with Fellaini this season.

He says his best position is midfield but David Moyes like to use him as a CF. Either way, strong and adaptable. Van Percie would have an impact in this team not that this is on the cards, but it is an example how one fantastic player can make all the difference.

I think we are doing well with the cards TB has been dealt, but to carry on playing the way we are and get better at it is key. Every game is a lesson for the players and it is more about the team learning from their mistakes and making the right decisions. There has been a massive improvement from last season although it doesn’t show it in the table.

If we do get one or two players in Jan, they have to be the right ones, but I think we can make the top six with what we have got if we improve as a team and take our chances in front of goal.

Consistency, consistency, consistency.

The footballing world is littered with ex-pro's who make great impacts and play outstanding football, and should have gone onto great things, but could only muster that quality in patches (normally when they're trying to get a new contract). Not saying JFC is like that, he's young, but its the consistency that makes great players.

For the most part we are on the same page Hovite.

I would hope that we go for a hold up/striker rather than a all out striker. My thinking is that with a H UP striker he should be able to bring CMS into the game more, others too, where as a all out striker would, just as CMS does, rely on the service he gets.

So now I am down to a H UP striker or a center back, I am going for the H UP striker. We have a good back line, and in Calde we have a good replacement and when Dunk is on his game he too is respectable cover. Most teams can only manage to get one by us, rarely do we concede two or more, if would could only score one goal more per game other than we are right now, we would be champions.

Perfect world, one hold up striker, one center back and one younger all out striker. I like our squad for this year, I would replace some but only because they seem not to be able to force themselves into the team, competition for places increases the performance of the squad as a whole but you have to be good enough to take your chance.

Top six with what we have, maybe, if injuries don't take their toll and we get consitent with converting our chances.
Can our existing top 18 players take enough points off those above us now and those just behind us, a top six
placing would require us to do so. I'll stick with maybe.

Plz Vegasseagull don't you go mad also. When JFC went to Oxford Poyet pointed out at the time he was going to Oxford because of the System they played.Thats on record. When Albion were playing away at Leicester back in Oct i went to the Crawley v MKD game. There was loads of guys there working for clubs.I pointed out more than once Lewis Dunk was not in our first team at the time,so why not take him on loan for a mth.His the same as that Elphick lad you had, little or know pace & can't control the ball.I think thats the same words Poyet used about him to the press after the palace game.Liverpool won't pay Anton Rodgers free money to keep his dad happy,so why do Brighton? We had a 38 man squad on the back of the palace programme, thats without Vicente & Rodgers for some reason. We don't need 40 players on the wage bill we are not MUFC or Chelsea. Its to much money to be paying guys that will never play for the first team.

Ok got it now, thanks

A team such as Oxford may, 'try,' to play passing football but that doesn't mean that they have the players to pull it off.
To be honest I would be very surprised had Gus come out and said that the lad was aiming too low by going to Oxford.
The kid looked quite usefull when he got his chance with us, perhaps he needs better players around him to bring the best out of him. I only say this as I can't think that the lad has lost his skills in the few months he has been out on loan. Good players can be dragged down just as some not so good can improve when playing with better players.

Time will tell.
