Albion pair poised to sit out Toon tie
11:27am Thursday 3rd January 2013 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Will Buckley. Injury will prevent last year's matchwinner against Newcastle from tackling the Toon again.
Albion are likely to be without Bruno and Will Buckley again for Saturday's FA Cup tie at home to Newcastle.
The right-back (Achilles) and right winger (hamstring) have yet to resume training.
Buckley's late goal at The Amex knocked Newcastle out in the fourth round last year.
Boss Gus Poyet has vowed to field the strongest side available to him in the quest for a repeat.
He told The Argus: "Apart from when we were in League One and convinced the only thing that mattered was getting up, in the rest of the years we were fair with the cups. We played the best team on the day.
"This one is tricky because it is on TV against a Premiership team, so you cannot be silly and not play your best team. We are going to play with the best we have.
"If Bruno is fit he will play. I'm not going to say it is maybe better to leave him until the week after. It is the same with Bucker but the problem is they are both not training today."
Jake Forster-Caskey and Romain Vincelot have returned from their loan spells with Oxford and Gillingham respectively ahead of Newcastle's visit.
Forster-Caskey, 18, was in the starting line-up against the Toon for last year's upset.
Poyet said: "He is back and training with us today. We will have a nice chat. I got very nice phone calls from both managers of Oxford and Gillingham thanking us for the behaviour and professionalism of the players.
"We will have a look at how much he has improved, how strong he is. I don't care about age, I only care about the performances, so we will look carefully at Jake and Romain as well."
Meanwhile, Albion remain in negotiations with Matt Sparrow over a financial settlement on the six months left on his contract.

I'd be right naffed off if he plays a weakened team as I feel I have paid a fully committed and well earned £28 to watch this game.

...... Rubbish!!!! ..... this was the line-up against non-League Wrexham in the 3rd Round last year .....who only earned a draw which resulted in a replay which we ended up winning on penalties.... this was nowhere near our 'best side'......

Football being a perverse game having beaten Newcastle last year when they were riding high in the Premiership (4th or 5th) I wonder if we won't this year since they are right out of form.
It is unfortunate for the Albion that the only way Newcastle can salvage anything from this season is by having a good FA Cup run. As a result I think they will be even more focused on Saturday's game than might otherwise be the case.
I am not trying to be pessamistic just simply trying to lower expectations.
However one way or the other it should be a cracking cup tie. UTA

Reading have got a couple of decent guys in, both less than £1m, leicester buy in a proven 2 and again both cost less than £2m combined. Even a player of Ba's calibre can now be bought for £5m (£2m was a golden handshake.
There are of course always exceptions as teams like Chelsea and the 2 Manchester residents will testify, but on the whole fees are very much lower.
On the other side of the coin, it would appear that with fees dropping, to get your man wages have increased. Only a few years ago no one earned 100k a week. Now, there are dozens of them.
For me and my opinion things have changed and probably for the better, especially for clubs like ours where we are careful with what we spend.
Just an observation.

I suppose if we keep our players, minus a few on the fringe , we could be looking to only bring in two new signings, a striker and a CB.
My hope is for two strikers, I still think that one is not enough.

ballantrrae, I would have thought Newcastle will be more focused on their relegation battle. They had a tough game last night and lost to Everton. If anything they will be resting players.
There is no pressure on us, we have nothing to lose and no points are involved, unless you are Barnesy.
I think we will start the game the same as Ipswich with Bruno and Vicente on the bench instead of March and Dunk.
Not bothered about winning, I just want to see us put on a show, link up and perform.

So you end up with higher wages, shorter contracts and lower transfer fees.
Has anyone else noticed that fees on the whole for players being bought in have reduced significantly? I am of course talking across the board and not just about the Albion.

Rooney is on £200k a week and that’s way over the point where I would be insulted if I were a Man U fan. He is not £185k better than CMS and CMS would probably do just as well in a Man U side.
We will have a state of the art computer model working years in advance which takes into account a predicted down turn in players cost and wages, paying back the £100 mill loan for the Amex plus the running of it, including a promotion budget. All we do is program in multiple plans and the computer spits out the various data scenarios, and then Tony just decides which hand to play. Everything is a calculated risk from the top to the bottom of this club.
If we contract a player now, on £45k a week for 3 years it would cost £7 million, and we could probably get the same or better player for half the costs next year.

Yep SMF20, even the over inflated wages the players will decrease as their contracts start ending over the next few years. I don’t think Bridge will be on £90k a week again and who could realistically afford more than 20k a week. QPR are spending masses and their owners will never get it back again.

Unless Bruno and Buckley are 100% fit I would rather save them for the following league game as that would give them another week to recover and train and it would allow someone else to play 90 minutes. If Calde is fit 90 minutes would do him the world of godd as it would with Dicker as he has not had much game time recently. Possibly play Dunk for Adam and get Hoskins or Dobbie on from the start. Still a good strength team capable of beating Newcastle. Comments anyone !!
