Calderon backs Ulloa to make a big difference to Albion
10:15am Tuesday 15th January 2013 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Leonardo Ulloa (left) has his EU passport and is all set to become an Albion player
Inigo Calderon reckons Leonardo Ulloa will be a big hit for Albion.
He expects the Argentinian target man to be a handful for Championship defenders - just as Ulloa was for Calderon and his colleagues back in Spain.
Ulloa now has his EU passport and is poised to complete his move from Almeria to The Amex tomorrow or Thursday after watching Calderon and Albion beat Derby County on Saturday.
Calderon, back in the side after a knee injury, is relieved he will be on the same side as the striker dubbed 'The Cyclone'.
The right-back revealed: "I played against him a couple of times when I was in Spain. When I was at Alaves he was with Castellon so it was maybe four years ago.
"We struggled to defend against him, so hopefully it is going to be a struggle for other defenders.
"I remember he was big and his record is so good. Hopefully he can keep doing the thing he does best, scoring goals. I know for sure he is going to give us a big hand.
"I think he is going to give us something different that we don't have now, a big presence at the top of the team."

Fingers crossed his agent hasnt got plans to tout him around now, I suspect if he signs he will be bench at best on Saturday, Gus likes to give new signings a customary two and a half minutes action.
I ould love him to be unleashed on the Gunners or Swansea next week, perhps with CMS picking up the pieces around him,... happy days.
Udinese wanted him but had to many players noticed on espn transfers they have moved a forward out to the Watford farm I hope thus isn't to clear the way for our target man.fingers crossed

There is a little voice in the back of my head telling me thta we are not done with inward bound players. I have this gut feeling that someone is within our sights.

Brighton are lining up a move for Plymouth goalkeeper Christian Walton.
The 17-year-old is highly regarded at Plymouth and has attracted the interest of a number of Premier League clubs, including Fulham.
Walton, who has been at Plymouth since the age of 10, has yet to play a first-team game for the League Two club, but he has impressed in their youth sides.
Brighton have now expressed an interest in the shot-stopper and they have taken him on trial so that Gus Poyet and his coaching staff can cast an eye over him.
If Walton impresses during his training stint he could make a move to the AMEX Stadium with Plymouth likely to sell for the right price.

The beating of Newcastle gave us enough money to buy 3 or 4 young lads for the developement squad. Beat our next opponents and we could buy 3 or 4 more. The cup might be second place in our priorities but the benefits from it can be immense.
I am thinking that the average youngster would cost no more thna 100k each.

Half way thru the transfer window and we have seen a developement squad defender join us and, as stated by another, a deal basically done for a striker, is that the end?

There is a little voice in the back of my head telling me thta we are not done with inward bound players. I have this gut feeling that someone is within our sights.
Outgoing rumours include JFC to Brentford for the rest of the season and Dobbie to Millwall also to the end of the season. A pity if JFC did go out to some extent since he (JFC) seems to have had an excellent game for the DS against Bournemouth today.
Two incoming rumours. Sky Sports Transfer News reports that we are trialling a young goalkeeper from Plymouth called Christian Walton (For the DS I imagine). On Football Transfer Rumours there is yet another posting saying we are interested in Sebastian Fernandez of Malaga. Since Malaga have just acquired young Chelsea striker Piazon on loan it is feasible that Malaga might be selling/releasing a striker themselves.
Rumours of course are one thing actual activity another but given Poyet was quoted on this site yesterday as saying he was hoping/wanting to sign at least one more player this month I think your feeling that someone else will join the club is quite likely.
In fact some of the rumours are almost in a sense linked. If Fernandez was signed then it might be logical for Dobbie to go out on loan.

Other than that some good 'rumours' going around--exciting days ahead?? As long as we do not break the bank, which i am sure we will not do---get some good loan players with the option of buying IF we do go up.

Many on here, I can understand why, would be of the opinion that we do not need another midfield player, but that could be where Poyet is directing his interest.
I would not be at all surprised if we were checking out play makers. We have one in Vicente and possibly, to a lesser degree another in David or Orlandi but I don't think we can consider ourselves strong in this department.
The previous stated opinon by Gus that we could do with a new center back may have wained a little.
When all our defenders are fit we are reasonably well served at the back, and we now have the young Latvian.
If Gus is restricted in any way by finances I think this is the area where he will forsake his wishes.
If only one more first team addition, then my guess would be an attacking midfield play maker.

How can the club be so badly mismanaged as to be annually £8m in the red in view of the income stream that it has and yet to be buying players and paying salaries that it patently cannot afford, so as to be potentially in default of the Fair Play rules. Barber talks inanely about fans needing to support the club. Is that not what manifestly happens now?

The only thing we know for certain is that last year we lost 8 million, we have no idea as to how that figure is constructed. It is very possible that a large percentage of that loss was caused by one off payments. Legal fees, consultants and architechts all related to our new training ground may well be included in that figure. The expansion of our scouting team will have added to our overall wage bill, and whilst they are an ongoing cost, they are a justified expense, IMHO.
BHA is a business and it is fair to say that the business only really got launched when we moved to the Amex. Any new business, of a decent size, will be expected to lose money during it's first 3 or 4 years of operating. The long term viability of BHA is solid, if it were not I doubt banks would be prepared to advance us the money we need to expand. Not all of the money being invested is coming from Tony Bloom.

If the new signings plus our current boys can win us promotion with all the financial benefits that go with the Premiership then maybe the £8m loss will be worth it--I trust Mr Bloom not to take any risks with the clubs finances---and his!!!

.
I think we are well served with attacking midfielders ie Vicente (when fit), JFC, Orlandi and Dobbie. Barnes can also play just behind a lone striker when Poyet adopts his favoured 4 - 5 - 1 formation.
What we appear to lack is a powerhouse midfielder. Last season Poyet said that to get the best out of Vicente we needed that type of midfielder and after Saturday's performance I think we still do.
i appreciate we might not agree with the detail but we are I think on the same page otherwise (re a midfielder).
Most of all I feel we lack physical presence in midfield. Ulloa will/should provide physicality up front but we still need more further back - El-Arb provides it in the Back 4.
I am sure you will have further comments Vegas..

" A la Grant Hall going to Spurs for 1.5Mill, as reported by sportsmole.co.uk, without even establishing himself in the first team.

Im still amazed at the 1.5Mill we got for him actually, but apparently its true.
Outside of that the whats the worst that can happen,
1) we sell them for what we paid,
2) they play in the 1st team one day.
3) Or we make BIG BUCKS BABY !
Its all good to me and smart future business planning with one eye on cashing in later.
