It's tense - but David volley is enough
5:12pm Saturday 23rd February 2013 in Sport By Brian Owen
Albion beat Burnley with a David volley at The Amex today – but they made hard work of a 1-0 success.
David struck with a superbly executed left-foot finish on 21 minutes after a cross by the impressive Wayne Bridge had been helped on by the head of Andrea Orlandi.
The result was enough to see the Seagulls into sixth place after Middlesbrough lost to Millwall.
Orlandi also thought he had teed up a goal for Leo Ulloa, only for the striker to somehow fire off target from point blank range.
Burnley, though, also had chances in an entertaining first half and Albion keeper Tomasz Kuszczak again played a big part for his side.
This time the Pole, who was key to recent wins over Hull and Cardiff, got down to his left to make a fabulous save as Jason Shackell’s downward header from a corner seemed goalbound.
Shackell had earlier seen a similar effort hacked off the line by recalled Gary Dicker as Burnley chased an equaliser.
Burnley had a lot of the ball afer the break.
Chris McCann fired the Clarets’ best chance of the second half off target from close range.
Albion sent fit-again Gordon Greer on as a third centre-back for the last few minutes and clung on to the precious points.

Thought Ulloa played well, other than missing the sitter. Bridge and Thomaz excellent as was Vicente.
Good to keep another clean sheet although we rode our luck at times. Central defence look a shade suspect at times. I still believe Bruno is a liability in defence.
Nice to finally see a shot in the box go on target and indeed find the net. It keeps us in the race.

A draw today wouldn't have been an unfair result. I guess it's true and that things do even themselves out over the season.
A few of the boys were very much lacking today but that is of course down to individual opinion.
My one hope and fear if you like is that Gus doesn't take a step back in going for wins.
We have had a great run since the Wednesday defeat and this is partly down to a more adventurous line up... Today though was very one paced.
Cms and Lua Lua on the bench and Buckley not in the squad, his pace was missed even if he is not at the top of his game at the moment.
Another 3 points though and Millwall currently doing us a favour.
Be brave Gus and keep us up there.

Vicente again at the centre of most creation (some of his turns are bewildering) but seemed to get more crowded out in the second half when Burnley started to run the midfield and we started to look very nervous and play more and more long balls (more than I've seen all season actually). Obviously we rely on Bridcutt alot.
Shame Ulloa missed that chance, could have been the platform to go on to win convincingly & personally would have settled him.
Bridge and El Abd excellent at the back again although Burnley were getting plenty of headers in from open play and corners, and of course TK so important again (that save from the header in the first half where he clawed it back from behind himself was almost Pele/Banks 1970 vintage!)...it looked all the world like it was already in.

Every supporter looks forward to his/her team attacking their end in the second half, thats why teams like Leeds, used to stick away fans up in the corner. 3 points is all that matters, poor display unfortunately, but the heart of our great team was...disrupted !. Always Albion. UTA

Sorely missed Bridcutt, Hammond was anonymous.
Nothing much to offer up front, Ulloa unimpressive. Missed two good chances and they don't come often. Will take ages to adapt to the physical side of the English game and got himself booked again. Really not convinced at all. Poor signing on the evidence so far.
Burnley will feel aggrieved not to have got something out of the game, they certainly deserved it.
My fingers and toes have just thawed out.

That said defence again good ,( brono poorest again) midfield ,Vicente apart lacking a bit and Liam was definiately missed. Ulloa good except with finishing which no better really than cms ,just different type.
Thank goodness for Tomas ,he was the difference today.
We are owed the last two wins so roll on next Saturday ,all we need is to stay in the mix ,which we are . Season alive . UTA

What we did miss was another forward up front as Ulloa clearly needs another striker with him. Gus will ruin him if he keeps isolating him...the same syndrome that affected CMS.
Also, why no fast player positioned near the half way line when we defend corners? We have nobody to release the ball to when it clears as all are back defending. That is just stupid. (You don't have to be an ex-Premiership player to be astute tactically.... before some cretin says that Gus knows more than us.)

Well done lads, a real nail biter by the sounds of it, but 1-0 is 1-0. Glad to hear that Vicente ran the show for almost the entire game. He's going to be the difference at the end of the season. Don't like to hear that Leo missed a sitter tho. Meanwhile Millwall are 2 up. Up the Albion!

I think Ulloa needs a little more time, the man works his socks off,the best strikers miss easy chances,i believe Leo will come good in a massive way,he needs our support, and for one hes got mine ,,,,,COME ON LEO...UTA
Continue to want Calde in for Bruno who currently just struggles for me. Thought Ulloa looked very sluggish in the second half and the manager was absolutely right to get CMS on who immediately harried defenders in a way that Ulloa has not been able to do yet. Not at our best but we are heading for the playoffs of that I'm now absolutely certain.

You're certainly not holding back anything in your posts but in the main I'm inclined to agree with 4 of your 5 points.
Bridge was the best player on the pitch today and did carry our most attacking threat.
Ulloa does desperately need some support up top to make him the player we hope he will be.
Vicente although very good again did not run the show from start to finish as others have suggested.
And finally... We desperately lacked pace in the side today and so I'm in agreement yet again.
ill take the 3 points though and look forward to our next match that will hopefully have a starting line up that looks just a little different.

i was not there so my opinion is worth little, but as with all us that hug the radio and hang over the computer, with baited anticipation,it was clear that we had a bad game overall.
Wayne as always seems to be a rock,Upson is seemingly getting into the groove pretty quick, apparently Bruno is not the player we thought he was going to be,maybe he would be better suited in midfield?.
Have to agree with the lads above, why bring in Leo to play alongside Craig, then seperate them!?.
Huddersfield next week, should be easier than today,i so wanted us to muller Bonleh (as Blackburn call them),their spelling not mine.
It seems our heart is indeed our Heart, our midfield was under fire, more than usual today, credit that they held tight, against what was it seems a determined Burnley. More credit to our lads. UTA
