Albion on guard for the other Clásico

The Argus: Aitor Karanka is now in charge at Middlesbrough Aitor Karanka is now in charge at Middlesbrough

Albion have been warned to expect improvement from Middlesbrough in today’s Championship version of El Clásico.

The clash at the Riverside Stadium pits the Seagulls’ head coach Oscar Garcia against Aitor Karanka.

They were rivals as players for Barcelona and Real Madrid but also Olympic and under-21 team-mates for Spain.

Karanka has got off to a sticky start at Boro with one win from four matches, the same record as Oscar had at the start of his reign with the Seagulls.

They beat Bolton 1-0 last time out at the Riverside (see accompanying video).

Oscar’s assistant Nathan Jones told The Argus: “They are a good side with good players. I’ve seen them enough last year and this year and they are decent.

“Obviously he (Karanka) has made tweaks to the squad in terms of how they play so it might take a little bit of time to implement those ideas.

“We are in good form. We had a blip against Barnsley but we bounced back in good fashion against Leicester and now the players are desperate for the game to come.”

The Albion squad flew to the North-East yesterday afternoon for one of their longest trips of the season.

Jones said: “The journey is made far better by the way club looks after us. In years gone by travelling to Middlesbrough we would have been seven or eight hours on the coach but that isn’t the case any more.”

The Seagulls fly, watch us soar to the top of the league and take our place amongst the elite where we belong, if we can match the El Clasico matches referred to above bring it on, with our players returning from injury lets see Oscars attacking style and put some fear into the rest of the league.
Onwards and upwards its ours for the taking.

Great to see the squad coming together now as the injuries start to clear up. Under OG it seems to be a much happier place to be, and great to read how desperate they are to get it on at the Riverside.

Only changes today I guess will be Leo on the bench with some goal keeping cover. Really fancy a win today, with real possibilities against Huddersfield and Charlton.

CMS as a nice post Christmas bonus would set 2014 op very nicely.

Middlesbrough are awful, if we don't get 3 points here then our manager and players need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Boro is a well run and well funded club. They are underperforming at the moment, so they will improve. They were close to the play offs last season. A draw would be a good result for Brighton, a win would be fantastic.

I'd be grateful for any point from Boro today. They are a better team than their position suggests and they are on the up under their new coach, so a point for us would be a plus from a ground we do not do very well at. I well remember the 9 v 0 drubbing we got there when a certain B Clough scored 5 !!

Hey Vegas, you were right about the odds on us ,needles to say i went for my usual accy of 5 , The Mighty Albion of course,Everton,Derby away,Coventry and Wolves, which works out at about 19/1 . Like you i am hoping SW will be fit enough to play, and i will stick my neck out and predict an Albion victory with at least one Barnes goal !. UTA

I will check out the results with my fingers crossed for you Tug, 19/1, good odds.
I don't think that you are sticking your neck out in predicting a win for us today, to be honest I quite fancy it. We will need to play with the same resolve we showed against Leicester, chase them down and not let them settle. Barnes to score, maybe, but Crofts is due another one. Boro have not been defending set pieces that well so maybe young Mr. Ince might nod one in, Ince or Upson.

Not having Ward concerns me a little, Oscar, as we know, will give the young lads a chance if he feels they can rise to the occasion, if Calde fills in at left back ahead of Maksi or Chicksen, would that be a sign that neither of the lads is making the grade? A natural left back has to be better than a converted right back. I would love to see Maksi start and have a good game as I feel that the left back spot, without Ward, is our weakest link.

Thought you would have had at least a quid on a Palace victory tug? 16/1 at William Hills.
