Upson heads late winner

The Argus: Matthew Upson all smiles after scoring Matthew Upson all smiles after scoring

Matthew Upson scored the only goal as Albion became the first team to win at Middlesbrough since the opening day of the season.

The home side were unbeaten in eight games at the Riverside but Upson headed home on 86 minutes to shatter that record.

The goal capped a man-of-the-match display from Upson who was outstanding at the back.

The in-form Ashley Barnes went close to breaking the deadlock on ten minutes with a post from Craig Conway’s corner which struck a post.

Conway, in the final game of his loan spell, was giving Middlesbrough problems and it was from his cross that David Lopez fired a low left-footed shot into the arms of Shay Given on 17 minutes.

There was a concern for Albion when Matthew Upson was forced off with a head injury which required treatment, although he returned a few minutes later with a white headband and a new shirt.

Other than that there were not too many worries for Albion in the first half, even though the hosts came back into it.

Their best chance was a 25-yard strike which Peter Brezovan turned around his near post while Upson was off the pitch and then just before half-time Lukas Jutkiewicz failed to get any power or direction on his header when he in a good position.

Early in the second half Stephen Ward, who shrugged off a foot injury to play, tried his luck from 28 yards and Shay Given pushed his shot over the bar for a corner.

The bandaged Upson twice came to Albion’s rescue before the hour-mark, firstly clearing a dangerous George Friend cross from in front of his own goal and then getting the ball away again after Carayol drove it across the face of goal.

Oscar Garcia responded with a positive substitution, bringing on Kazenga LuaLua for David.

The home side got a grip on the game and began to stretch Albion without troubling Brezovan.

Leo Ulloa made his return from a fractured foot bone which ruled him out for nine games with seven minutes remaining.

The deadlock was broken on 86 minutes from a corner which Middlesbrough disputed.

Conway whipped it in from the right, Upson headed into the ground and the ball bounced up into the net.

Albion: Brezovan; Bruno, El-Abd, Upson, Ward (sub Calderon 75); Bridcutt, Ince, Crofts; Lopez (sub LuaLua 60), Barnes (sub Ulloa 83), Conway. Subs not used: Andrews, Dunk, Agustien, Walton.

Middlesbrough: Given; R.Williams (sub L.Williams 89), Woodgate (sub Gibson 46), Ayala, Friend; Whitehead, Leadbitter, Butterfield; Adomah, Jutkiewicz (sub Main 72), Carayol. Subs not used: Richardson, Smallwood, Haroun, Konstantopoulos.

Referee: Mark Haywood (West Yorkshire).

Our win, added to some other results that went our way, makes today a good day. I would bet that Boro will do us some favors before this season is out. A excellent win.

Good win, difficult conditions. These are the 'grind out a result' games that can make the difference.

Seemed like a poor game from reports, but 3 points still very sweet. Closing in on the play off places now. Players still to come back so we are starting to look much stronger contenders. All we ask for is a nice Xmas present of another 3 points next week!

Bare minimum acceptable result, this was a golden chance to boost our goal difference but sadly not taken. Middlesbrough are in freefall, total relegation fodder. It'll do, unfortunately the orher clubs around the bottom of the play offs won so nothings really changed. We really should be walking off with this league but it hasn't quite clicked, that's thanks to mr Scrooge aka bloom and his refusal to buy decent strikers.

Nice to see one our back four scoring, something we have lacked for the most part of this year. I am hoping that Ward came off as a precaution rather than a need. It sounds as though Brez did all that was asked of him, might have to rethink our keeper rankings soon.

Good win at a tough place to get points, but I have to question how many games we insist on starting with Lopez and have to replace him early in the second half because he's such a lightweight performer. Do we need much more evidence that he's pretty much a wash out this season. I for one am not suckered into him having a good 15 min spell last week as being evidence of a turn around.

Any one of a number of better options are available, preferably starting with Kaz or Buckley instead of Lopez.

In light of that, I have to say its an excellent result since we played the first 60 mins with ten men, as usual.

Well I didn't see the game so I can't comment on his performance, I guess it's possible that Oscar had a game plan and taking David off when he did was part of it, just as bringing on Ulloa was.

Celebbrating in Dr Browns at the moment after watching a well earned win. lopez and Barnes should have scored and Kll should have crossed to big Leo but decided to go alone. So my 4-0 mentioned on the radio should have been correct although I will take a 1-0 win away in all our away games.. Conway is a must keep player; was marked out of the game second half as he was a threat but kll should have done more. Good result and happy today.

What a fantastic result,i myself was watching the Hartlepool dwarf and simultaneously watching the BBC site for stats, plus keeping an eye on Flashscores, they are quicker than sky by a full minute.

Today was all about three of our lads,Matty because of the great thread y,day and Leo ,which is obvious, but for me it was Craig Conway ,he has made such an impact for us,and again today ,you couldn`t have written it better.

We are such a strong combination of qualities imho, and as such that is why consistencies are paramount,so there you go Mr Bloom ,sign CC ASAP please .

From the tiny amount you can gleam from" not being there",and i am really looking forward to hearing from those brave lads that were,it sounded as though we were good for the win, with some seriously good performances from our lads.

It looked like Big Peter and Terrier Adam gave us all they could again,we should feel proud that these guys dont play for so long, unyet at a moments notice give their all, please no inferences about it being their job, these guys have played their part in consecutive excellent wins .

We only have one home game left this month, and that is winable against an Huddersfield side that lost at home today, please no repeat of Barnsley, but a first goal back for Leo ! ,so proud to be BRIGHTON. UTA

If there is a commentary for the opposition that usually stays constant, gives a different bias but sometimes it is more satisfying to hear those comments from an opposition point of view.

Brave lads? I think there must have been a few females within the Azure throng.

Okay Boro is hardly Vegas but I would not compare watching a soccer game on teeside with a tour of duty.

So much of what you say is offensive.

Great result and after yesterday's story re Matty Upson totally predictable. He goes off injured, presumably gushing blood and returns to head the winner as well as helping keep a clean sheet. What a player. Also well done to Peter and Adam our stand in players and to the whole team for bringing home the points. It's all moving in the right direction.
What we tend to forget is Oscar has been in charge for less than 5 months yet we seem to be progressing very nicely thank you. UTA

Cheer up Brighton won, or where you more concerned with the events at Stamford Bridge?
The result from Stamford Bridge has been a matter of record for nearly 1000 years.

So, to ask again, why would anyone put it down to anything?
Clever.

Thewithdeanyears - A.K.A Wayne Kerr. You've surely all come across him at some stage in your lives, he's the master of disillusion and inanity - the one that pees on little kids fireworks and writes scathing letters to Points of View.
What causes him to to be like this? Fear, insecurity, a tiny pianist? Only his counselor can answer that, meanwhile we have had to bravely put up with him and humor his obvious derangement, while being safe in the knowledge that while we have hopes and dreams for both our lives and our team all he has is a computer and a grudge.
R.I.P withdeanyears - its time to fornicate and travel.

Bet Christmas is jolly on your house.

Bet Christmas is jolly on your house.
Actually after Christmas dinner we go through the albions income in relation to league position and plot them on a graph. These last few years we are underperforming on the pitch considering the club income from ticket revenue. I dread to think what a sorry story this years Christmas day figures will tell us. We were actually better when we were at the withdean. So yes Christmas is a hoot, tracing that steady downward trend. Supporting the seagulls above and beyond the call of duty.

That is exactly what I said in an email to mr bloom. Strong rumours of an Uzbekhistanian consortium wanting to bank roll a premier league assault, they will take care of everything, this could be just the help we've been waiting for.

What you seem to forget is three years ago this club was playing at a ground that only held 9,000 people , we may be at a new ground that holds 33,000 people, but we do not yet have bottomless pit of money . How many clubs have you seen get promotion then full back down the leagues, Middleborough for one I don't know what the riverside holds but 13,000 did fill
half the stadium so how can they braking even let alone be making money. We all want promotion but at the right time for the club, so lets be a bit patient it will happen.
