Loan target is up and running again

The Argus: Jonathan Obika played for Spurs' development team yesterday Jonathan Obika played for Spurs' development team yesterday

Albion could renew their interest in Jonathan Obika as striker back-up during the January transfer window.

Obika made his comeback from injury for Spurs yesterday in a 2-2 friendly draw at home to the Seagulls' development team.

Albion wanted to borrow Obika, 23, earlier in the season, but his injury wrecked the deal.

Leroy Lita's loan from Swansea ends on January 1 and long-term ankle victim Craig Mackail-Smith remains some way off a return to action.

That leaves the Seagulls short of cover for fit-again Leo Ulloa and Ashley Barnes.

Shamir Goodwin and Emil Asmundsson twice put Albion ahead in the first half against Spurs. Obika set up an equaliser for Darren McQueen and Ruben Lameiras levelled four minutes from time.

We have got Lita, give him a chance, I remember Coppell quoting him as a natural goal scorer, what's the problem ?

This is embarrassing. Who negotiated the deal with Leroy Lita - who thought he would be of use to us...? Certainly not OG, who hasn't given him a look in even though the guy scored with a half chance in the dozen minutes he has played. If only our own striker could do the same...!!! As for rushing out to get an injury ridden guy with no proven track record, what's the point. I remain more than a little confused by this entire saga. What the hell is wrong with our own development squad guys who are currently competing at the same level as this Obika...

No thanks! If Bridcutt leaves we can buy a very good goalscorer for 5 million. What about Shane Long of West Brom

Why didnt we give Lita a chance,i am sure he would have scored in the Huddersfield game.It was a fruitless search for forward cover and it will be the same if we get Obika. We need more class such as Carlton Cole.

This can't be doing Leroy's self esteem much good. Oscar clearly doesn't rate him. He is a proven goal scorer and he hasn't been given hardly any opportunity to show us what he can do. I don't suppose we'll ever find out why. Mind you after Ashley's performance on Saturday, Leroy must start on Boxing Day. Merry Christmas everyone. UTA

If you only have one fit striker, which is where we were when we borrowed Lita, one plays and one is on the bench. Barnes found some form and scored goals, so no need to replace him, his cover player stays on the bench. With just two fit strikers you are not going to play them both, no cover should one get injured.
Ulloa is now on his way back, soon we will have both he and Barnes available for 90 minutes Lita now covers both strikers as he is not going to replace Ulloa. If CMS is not going to be available before the window closes, we will need cover on the bench. We could renew the loan deal for Lita, borrow someone else or promote from the reserves but what ever option we take, that player will only ever be cover. If it looks as though CMS is pretty much done for this season, that may prompt Oscar to borrow, or sign, a striker with the intent of giving him playing time, CMS is the key to the winter window.

Yes PLEASE! Easily the most underated striker in the Premiership. Now that really would be an xmas present worth waiting for!

Shane Long is a good player, so why would he drop down a division as well as take a massive pay cut? Word has it that Steve Bruce is trying to take him to Hull City, assuming WBA are willing to sell him.

I personally don't think CMS will be back before February and even then with match fitness etc I don't think he is going to be able to have much impact on the season end.
It looks like Bridcutt will be on his way in Jan and strong rumours persist re Barnes and Burnley, also bear in mind he has never signed his new contract.
If that happens and Lita goes back to Swansea then we have 1 striker at the club.
I don't know what Bridcutt will fetch but my guess would be about 2.5 million and then his move may be dictated by which club can offer us the best deals re players, I cannot see the club paying out a vast sum in transfer market. Conway will come back hopefully.
One thing is for sure the club need to get this right,if we don't get some quality support up front then our season will fade.

The worst case scenario.

Lita goes back, done.
Barnes gets sold, done.
CMS ruled out for the season, done.
One striker remains, Ulloa.

Conway comes back, done.

That scenario could not be tolerated, the club HAS to sign two new strikers, that might turn out to be a good thing.

Evening Vegas,
I think Lita has been a missed opportunity for us, Barnes is not a striker and Lita would have scored far more goals for us, take out Barnes's 2 penalty's and 3 goals is a pretty poor return for the amount of game time he has had. Would Lita have scored Saturday! IMO yes, he would have buried the 2 chances Barnes missed, play Barnes behind a quality striker and he will shine,he is running his heart out at the moment no argument there but we are lacking in goals scored and Lita would have improved that, come the end of the season we don't need the extra worry of goal difference.
Lita has no injury problems, is proven at this level and with the Cms return date unknown we could already be in a position of knowing we have back up, instead we could be looking at another injury prone player!
Start Ulloa Boxing Day with Barnes behind him, when Ulloa tires bring Lita on to run at the tired defence and we will win 2-0. UTA

Barnes to Burnley - dont make me laugh!!
Ings has got 16 or so for them this season compared to Barnes half-a-dozen and whilst I am supportive of AB and Burnley might play a style that more suits him there is no way Barnes is good enough to replace Ings (should he actually leave!) and not just take them into the Premiership but help keep them there too!!
