Albion have signed loan target Jon Obika at last – and he could make his debut on Saturday.

The 23-year-old striker arrives at The Amex on what the Seagulls have now confirmed is a 93-day deal from Tottenham.

He is available for the visit of Birmingham City on Saturday.

Head coach Oscar Garcia has stressed Obika has joined to work alongside existing strikers Leo Ulloa and Ashley Barnes.

Oscar said: “Our target was to bring an extra striker into the squad, alongside Leo and Ash, and as cover for Craig (Mackail-Smith) and Will (Hoskins) as they continue their respective comebacks from their injuries.”

Albion's interest in Obika was first reported by The Argus four months ago but he was sidelined by injury for a period before Christmas.

He scored a total of 17 goals in his four loan stints with Yeovil, where he worked with current Albion assistant head coach Nathan Jones.

Oscar added: “Jonathan is someone we have been aware of for some time – because Nathan has worked closely with him in the past at Yeovil and Charlton.

“It is known that we tried to bring him earlier in the season, but were not able to due to an injury, so we are pleased to have him here now.”

Obika proved he is good touch by scoring six goals for Spurs under-21s in a 10-6 friendly win over Charlton this week.

Good cover player and capable of changing things up at 60 minutes, he also helps cover the possibility of Barnes making a move in this window. One month deal for a one month window.

Yet another NJ signing? Come on Oscar, can we at least have someone from Barcelona please. Let's hope we play this LOAN STRIKER as the last one (Lita) only warmed the bench!
Play him, if he's any good sign him, if not wave goodbye, hope he doesn't turn out to be another sick note!
Don't think we will see him play Saturday, who would we drop, Ulloa! I think not, unless he's slipped under the radar of all the other teams and is phenomenal in front of goal he will be another bench warmer.

TBG would you not agree that this has all the hallmarks of a cover signing and nothing more, at this stage.
Ulloa and Barnes, that's it on the striker front. 'If,' Barnes were to go we would be in the doo doo, as we would if he or Ulloa were to get injured. I think Lita was a knee jerk signing, at least Obika has been on our radar for a while.
The FA Cup match will give him a chance of 90 minutes, and I am sure he will get off the bench for the last 25-30 minutes of a few matches before the cup.

Bad day at work, I even gave myself a thumbs down for that one!
I've been asking for a young striker recently so should think before quoting, if he plays and knocks in a few, instant hero but becomes expensive, can he work alongside Ulloa? or just be back up, one month initial loan could be until end of season, depending on Cms and Barnes imo.

I'm hoping that he has pace to burn.. It's what we lack up top and gives an opposing teams defence another reason to not press on against us.

Could be a good loan this one but we will see.

Hi Vegas, definatly cover for Ulloa, Barnes not so sure. A 93 day loan by all accounts now being quoted so could pave the way for Barnes's departure (£1m) please Burnley.
Could we play Ulloa and Obika together?
FA Cup could be his chance yes, and like you say a run out to see how he fits in if we are in a winning position before hand.
Quite like this, players coming in, others being refused transfer requests and bids turned down, we will not be messed with any more. UTA

Naughty naughty. The Burnley press says no such thing. The accurate report says they bid £500K and were rebuffed but might come back with a £750K offer.
Meanwhile they are reportedly interested in Boro's Jutkiewitz who seems happy to be a bench warmer.

Yes the club have rectified their error, thanks.

This signing does make sense as it has been made reasonably early in the window. If by chance Barnes were to go in the next week or so, we would still have two strikers and time to sign a cover player. I doubt that the club would want to lose Barnes but if they feel they have to, at least we won't be left with just one striker.

Will we play with two strikers, maybe for some matches, but we certainly wouldn't if we only have two strikers available. Lita was described as a, 'flop,' by a few newspapers, I have a feeling that a suit at Brighton made that deal where as Obika deal has the Jones handwriting all over it.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Oscar to play two strikers. That's not what they do at Barcelona and no top European teams play like that anymore. Barnes can play partly on the wing because he's very disciplined, which is why coaches love him. The 4-3-3 system relies on players being flexible, intelligent and interchanging positions easily. The question is, can the club supply Oscar with the quality of player required to make this system work in the Championship?

I shall be extremely disappointed if Barnes leaves, he is one of those players who you don't appreciate until he's gone.

Yes, I agree with you. Apart from his competitive attitude, he is generally injury free and knows what is expected... although he might have had fewer games if other strikers had been fit, I think both Poyet and Garcia have recognised the importance of his contributions.

Intelligent? That's Barnes out then :-)

Great post.

The game has drastically gone the way of having 3 central midfielders and trying to dominate possession of the ball. This makes it difficult to play 2 strikers. So, we shouldn't expect it too much unless we're losing maybe.

It does make another loan signing slightly odd as you only see Obika playing if Leo and/or Ash get injured, suspended or leave. Or we are losing!

The days of 2 wingers and 2 strikers are gone for the timebeing. Any teams attempting it would get overrun in midfield more times than not and therefore struggle to win too many. It means the goal poaching strikers like Lineker, Fowler and Defoe are disappearing too as they don't have the all-round game to be a lone striker.

Anyway, maybe Obika will come on and sniff out a goal or 2. Could be crucial when May comes.

Good points, although the best side I've seen this season (Albion apart of course) on tv, has been Man City, who do play with two strikers. However, to complement the system, they do have fantastic, technically gifted and flexible midfielders, as well as attacking fullbacks.
