Monakana gets his first chance to impress

The Argus: Jeffrey Monakana is set to make his Albion debut in the Sussex Senior Cup tonight Jeffrey Monakana is set to make his Albion debut in the Sussex Senior Cup tonight

Albion's new winger Jeffrey Monakana makes his debut in the development squad tonight.

The former Preston North End and Arsenal prospect is scheduled to start for Simon Ireland’s side in the Sussex Senior Cup third round clash against Eastbourne Borough at Lancing (7.45pm).

Monakana joined Albion from Preston last week for an undisclosed fee on a development contract until June 2015.

The 20-year-old made more than 40 appearances in League One for Preston and Colchester on loan.

The squad for tonight’s tie also includes Christian Walton, back from an England training camp for goalkeepers, and Brennan Dickenson who is expected to move before the January transfer window closes.

Season ticket holders are not entitled to free admission. Prices are £5 for adults and £2 concessions.

Albion (from): Walton; Deen, Hunt, Richards, Dallison, Rea, Monakana, Harris, Muitt, Starkey, Dickenson, Davis, Smith, Asmundsson, Benham, Lall.

He might find himself in the first team sooner rather than later if hamstrings and Poyet continue to wreak devastation to our squad. Good luck to the boys tonight.

Good luck to the lad tonight, hope he does well, but severely underwhelmed, no sign of any top senior players arriving for any position then ! Still as long as we get money in and save wages too eh Mr Burke, at least your bonus will look good at the end of the year for all the savings made !!.
Can the board please show as much ambition as the fans, two weeks left and my season tickets renewal hangs in e balance. Maybe its time to pick and chose matches next season. !

Presumably you're one of those people who want he club to splash money it doesn't have - we're £9 million in debt - on some stupidly over priced reserve team player who is likely to be no better than what we've already got. Personally I'd rather wait until the summer when our financesl should be more positive - we may have a god cup run , we may have money from selling Bridcutt - and players contracts have expired.
Do want to sign another Stephen Dobbin just so we can say we signed someone?

Good shout! If he's fit, why not throw him in against Port Vale. We see what he can do and he sees that if he works hard there will be opportunities for him.

100% agree.
I reckon that the club has what money will be needed to bring in two or three new players, the money gained from selling Bridcutt is not a factor, and I say that because we don't know if we will sell him but we do know that we are going to bring in some new blood.

Just think how many promising young lads we could sign if just 1.5 million was set aside for DS player recruitment.

As a club we actually need this lad to do well on a couple of levels.
There is a certain amount if unrest among the fan base, people questioning some of the transfer decisions both in and out. A run of consistently good performance from this lad would go some way to assuring the fan base that someone at the club actually is making the right decisions.
If this lad can quickly prove himself, maybe get on to the bench, gain a little playing time as a sub, this will go along way to attracting other such lads to join us. Young players, their parents and agents will be keeping a watching brief on how DS players progress at our club. JFC, Solly and Ince, are good adverts for our new facility, Monakana could be the next one to make the step up over the coming months or some time next season.

Actually, Ive been a supporter for over forty years, season ticket holder at the Goldstone, Withdean, and now the Amex (four tickets), and have followed the team all over the country include being at Newcastle in 1979 amongst others, all I am questioning now is how come we let good players go, and replace them wit ones that either can't get in the team or only get in if half the squad are injured,! I don't say we spend what we have don't have, but I would like to see two or maybe three quality players arriving, instead of players that are championship reserves at best. I appreciate FFP but a others keep saying we are about the tenth best supported club in the country !.

I often wonder just who some of the contributors on here would have us sign. We are not a prem club, we area champ club, so should we be signing prem club players? At times we do sign prem club players who in the twilight years of their careers, it could be said that at the time of signing, they are now champ level players.
I would hope that there will be a time when we have prem quality, or at least players that are showing prem quality (Bridcutt), these players will probably be ones that we have developed, (Bridcutt), but that will take time.

I guess that the definition of a prem club player is one that is currently playing for a prem club and one that other prem clubs would sign, we can't compete with those clubs for signatures.
Champ level clubs have champ level players with the odd gem here and there, and the prem clubs will always come looking for those gems. We have the choice of either signing older ex prem players or sign younger players, maybe fringe/DS prem players, but who ever we sign they will be champ level until they either retire or develop depending on their age.

Wayne Bridge, Upson, Crofts, Bruno, Tomasz, none of these are prem level, not now, but they all have prem level experience, today they are good, or very good champ level players. Many of us think that Bridcutt and Ulloa would be able to step up, so I guess we should sign more that have their ability, but Bridders was developed by Brighton and Ulloa has yet to stand out as a top goal getter, he is edging there but he is not there yet. Three top end champ level players could cost us close to 8 or 9 million, three younger lads such as Ince would cost us next to nothing, that has to be the way to go but we would have to accept that they will need time to reach their true potential.

The choices are clear, build for the future or try to buy for instant success, one option gives us steady and growing progress, the other, well that gives us a chance of success and also a chance that we could end up a financial disaster club.

We may well be the tenth best supported club but we are up against twenty teams in the prem who are currently accruing massive amounts of cash through television rights added to this there are eight clubs currently playing in our division who are receiving parachute payments which are the equivalent of our annual gate receipts before a ball has been kicked we really are up against it with the way our football pyramid is currently being run, we would all like our club to make these "quality signings" but realistically unless we as fans put more and more of our hard earned in to make the dream a reality, we are just going to have to be patient and hope that Tony Bloom is successful in playing the long game and eventually we will manage to get to where every other championship club desires to be.
Supporting a football team is normally for life (well it is for me) and not just while the good times roll, I would imagine that after all the inward investment that our chairman has made the last thing he wants to read/hear is so called fans threatening to withdraw their support because success is not coming year on year etc.SEAGULLS
