Transfer window watch: Seagulls complete Stephens deal

The Argus: Dale Stephens signs today Dale Stephens signs today

Albion have kicked off their pre-deadline transfer activity in style - by signing Dale Stephens.

The midfielder this afternoon completed his much-anticipated move from Charlton Athletic.

He has agreed a deal through until June 2017 and heads to The Amex for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old will add energy to midfield which was lost when Andrew Crofts suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier this month.

Albion are believed to have paid £500,000 for the player.

The Seagulls had a £1million bid turned down for midfielder Adam Clayton at the weekend according to a Huddersfield source.

Head coach Oscar Garcia believs he will suit Albion’s style of play – and has been given extra insight by his assistant Nathan Jones, who worked with the player at The Valley.

Oscar said: “He's the type we like and want to bring to this club - dynamic, energetic and technically good.

“His character is good and he will fit well with the excellent squad we already have here.

"We know we are bringing a good player. Nathan has worked with Dale closely at Charlton and we have also done our analysis and research. I like what I have seen and I am sure he will suit our style, enjoy the way we want to play and help us.

"He has played many senior games already and knows the Championship but he is also still young, and is very hungry to succeed. I am sure he will prove an excellent addition to our squad."

Stephens was born in Bolton and played for Bury, Oldham and Rochdale before heading south.

He has scored four goals in 30 games this term.

Replacement for Crofts don't you mean? Bridcutt is more of a holding midfielder - playing just in front of the back 4.

Yes, I know where Bridcutt plays, and so does this chap. A Charlton blog described him as second only to Bridcutt in that role (within the Championship).

Seeing as the article didn't quote anything from Stephens himself, here it is:

"Every player wants to play at the top level and I believe Brighton have got everything in place to get there. My decision to come here was to get to the Premier League and hopefully I can do that with Albion.

"I know Nathan Jones well and have spoken to him on the phone a couple of times, but he didn't really need to sell the club to me as I have been here as a Charlton player and it is clear to see this is a big club, with a big ambition.

"The club are sitting in eighth position and it is a good place to be in at this stage of the season, so hopefully I can come in and help push the team on. I am delighted to have signed for such a big club, happy to have it done and dusted and happy to be here.

The Bolton-born midfielder also highlighted Albion's passing style as another factor in his move - and he has come up against Albion during his time at Oldham, Southampton and Charlton.

He added, "I know Oscar likes to play good football and with Nathan's influence it is really appealing to me and one of the major reasons I came to this club.

"Albion have always been a difficult side to come up against and they have always played the best football in any division they have been in. I like to get forward and score a few goals but I know I have got responsibilities on the defensive side of things. I try to get involved with everything I can but if the manager has a certain role he wants me to play then I will obviously do that, so now my first port of call is meeting the lads and getting in the side."

It's interesting that all the players seem to refer to OG as Oscar rather than boss / gaffer / coach. Do to mind as long as players are happy and improve under him.

Well done to all the team on this acquisition. I'm happy and looking forward to seeing him play. Shame he's cup-tied (I think)....he'll be gutted to have to sit out the cup final!!!

I just hope that he's now "in the right frame of mind" to earn his new wage packet! Thanks for all you've done Liam, but the way that you've handled yourself the last few weeks has put a downer on the way that some of us now view you. You could have still been sold for the same amount of dosh, without throwing your dummy out of the pram, and we'd think of you with much more fondness. We wished AB well, and, although glad that he didn't score against us the other evening, I really want him to do well, as he was a great (although much maligned) servant for the club.

I try to get involved with everything I can but if the manager has a certain role he wants me to play then I will obviously do that, so now my first port of call is meeting the lads and getting in the side."
Seeing as the article didn't quote anything from Stephens himself, here it is: "Every player wants to play at the top level and I believe Brighton have got everything in place to get there. It basically says Rodrigez is not being played and wants to get away!

Great news for:

The Albion. Getting a young-ish and excellent Championship player. Looking at Charlton forums (before they got wind of him leaving and starting criticising his abilities, in the normal sour grapes manner), they rated Stephens very highly.

And for Dale Stephens too - joining the rising Albion, with its magnificent fan base, and playing in the stunning & massive Amex. Add the great coaching and playing style of OG, and the soon to be completed training facilities ... he's a lucky boy!

Looks like Conway is off to Blackburn, I think with LuaLua back, Conway knew he would be playing second fiddle for us so chose them instead.
Good to see Dale Stevens joining us, he's the right age, and if we can make a couple of other signings aged under 25 in defence CB/RB I will be happy.
Building for the future but also staying in contention for the play offs and progression in the FA Cup, we seem to be getting the balance right and I am confident for the future of the Albion.

No, but his agent is keen... And there lies the problem. However, interestingly the reason bha have said no is they don't feel they have a replacement lined up to come in. As I said, it will be interesting to see the developments today. Lets hope he stays as he is a brilliant player on his day, when fit, that is. And, boy, those goals against Donny, eh?
