FA Cup countdown: Poyet could be back with Black Cats

The Argus: Gus Poyet's Sunderland will meet the winners of tonight's game Gus Poyet's Sunderland will meet the winners of tonight's game

Albion have been handed an extra incentive to win through tonight’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Hull City at the Amex.

Victory would put the Seagulls through to a quarter-final tie at home to a Sunderland side managed by their former boss Gus Poyet.

Poyet parted company with Albion in acrimonious circumstances last summer after three-and-a-half years on the South Coast.

His sacking came weeks after leading the Seagulls to the Championship play-offs.

The Uruguayan took over at the Stadium of Light in October and last month signed midfielder Liam Bridcutt, Albion’s player-of-the-season for the last two years.

Bridcutt has not played for Albion in the FA Cup this season and therefore would be eligible to play at the Amex should the Seagulls beat Hull.

It will be viewed as a favourable draw for Albion, having missed out on the big guns left in the competition including Manchester City who will face Wigan in a repeat of last season’s final.

With now just Hull and Sunderland – two teams who will prioritise Premier League survival over the Cup – standing in the way of Albion and a trip to Wembley in the semi-finals, fans will be hoping head coach Oscar Garcia resists the temptation to make too many changes tonight.

Hull are also expected to make a number of changes, as they have done in the two previous rounds this season against Middlesbrough and Southend.

It's inevitable that we'll all dream about Gus returning, Liam playing, us winning and then a trip (or two) to Wembley, but let's start the thread with the boring premise that we have to beat Hull tonight first!

If we do get past Hull, I would like to think that the Albion will give Poyet a good ovation, after all he did a very good job for us. We have moved on from that period and its in the past, lets not spoil the night by belittling Poyet, lets show our class by just getting on with the job in hand and concentrate on the future

Obviously no news to write about today??
After we win tonight we will not be playing against Mr Poyet we will be playing against 11 men of Sunderland football team.
Gus will be able to direct his team to the dressing room, toilets etc but once they come out at the AMEX it's Brighton and Hove Albion team selected by the Brighton and Hove Albion management staff they will face.
Read enough about Gus when he left so really not that interested in him just the Sunderland team we will face?

I fully understand your sentiments, but he did leave in a very "smutty" fashion!
Quite understandably all has not been revealed, but going by the massive volume of comments since his departure- I'm sure he's going to have a very rough ride should he return to the Amex.
When we were on a roll there was nobody finer......such a shame it ended how it did.

Personally I have faith in Oscar when in comparison it's still early days in his leadership.....he's doing a damned fine job! UTA

I sincerely hope Oscar does NOT play too much of a weakened team. Thousands of fans like myself have paid good money to go and watch what we hope will be an Albion win and progression in this prestigious English cup competition!

I shall be praying for The Albion to win tonight. It will give me great pleasure to BOO Poyet to the rafters in the next round and so will many thousands of others. Obviously not all on here by all accounts. I shall hate the very sound of the rat's name for the rest of my days.

Very well put. Its up to supporters how they want to react on such a night, not to be dictated to by someone who must have been asleep during Poyets last weeks. UTA

I think if we do get past Hull tonight, I'd love it if we greeted Poyet with a resounding wall of silence. MUCH more effective! UTA!
