Oscar Garcia wants his players to enjoy their play-off semi-final against Derby

First published in Sport by , Chief sports reporter

Albion head coach Oscar Garcia has told his players to show no fear as they chase the Premier League dream.

He wants them to relish the double-header against Derby County in the play-offs, rather than shrinking.

The Seagulls finished 13 points and three places adrift of Derby in the table but Oscar says that is no reason for apprehension in front of a packed house in the first leg at the Amex tonight.

The Spaniard said: “I will ask them. If someone has fear to play in this kind of game he will not play, because you have to enjoy it, you have to fight. We deserve to be here, we are good enough to be here and we will fight for our chance.

“It’s a game to enjoy, to enjoy fighting to win the game but, if you have fear to play these kind of games maybe you should be something else, not a player.”

Derby were the top scorers in the Championship with 84 goals in 46 games and completed a double over Albion but Oscar’s side had the second-best defence behind only promoted Burnley.

Oscar said: “We know that we are not favourites, we are the underdogs as they finished third and are the top scoring team in the league.

“They beat us home and away but in football anything can happen and with the players we have, everybody can trust that we will fight for our place.”

Albion are expected to still be without first choice right-back Bruno (groin) and midfielder Dale Stephens.

Oscar said: “We have a few players on the injury list but we have to wait to see who will be available.”

The second leg is at the iPro Stadium on Sunday and the winners face QPR or Wigan in the final at Wembley on May 24.

I hope that we would have learned from last years Play-Off matches when we went into them on a great run of form & then played too cautiously against Palace, especially in the home leg.
Easier said than done but it would be great if we could treat these games as a bonus & play as though we have nothing to lose, because our season was virtually over until injury time on Saturday.
However I've watched us enough times this season to expect a very cautious approach yet again.

I hope I'm wrong.

The key is to have absolute belief and play our very best football as we did for instance against Leicester. Tentative is not a word for this evening. Against Palace here last year we didn't go for it. Think Andy Murray for years in the tennis - to win a grand final you throw absolutely everything at it for that time frame - there are risks involved, it can go horribly wrong .... but ..... it will go wrong less often than if you are tentative and cagey. Let's get this done!! Absolutely everyone BHA in the stadium should be continually cheering on the Seagulls till their voices are hoarse ....

Great words from Oscar here. Our biggest notable failing in matches this season has been the lack of enterprise going forward, for fear of losing the ball. Lost count of how many times we've had the ball but been totally inert and static with 11 oppo players in front of us. We haven't won those games.

No fear!

If I was Derby I'd be worried - imagine finishing 13 points above your opponents and not going up, that must be playing on their minds. Having said that, if they are 13 points better than us on the night , then they deserve to win, but we can play a lot better than we have in many games this season. We need to be at the top of our game and we have a good chance. If we lose, I hope Derby go up. But let's hope we can surprise a few people.

Anyone can beat anyone else in this league but when it comes to the Play Offs it's a total lottery. That's why we have just as good a chance if not better of beating Derby. They finished third so should beat a team 13 points and 3 places below them. But as we know it doesn't always happen like that.
It's a mind game as much as anything else now. We just have to believe and even if things go wrong we just have to keep believing.
Oscar has got us this far. We just need to trust in his judgement and keep the faith. UTA

I think we would all agree that we have not been the most prolific when it comes to scoring goals this season but, we actually have a two goal lead over Derby in goal difference, that tells you a lot about Derby's defensive qualities.
Chances will come tonight at both ends, we have to take ours whlst also looking for our back five to live up to their reputation of being one of the best units in the division.

The way I see it some people might think we don't deserve to be in the playoffs yes I'm on about a few so called fans who post on this site, yer we have not played good attacking football for alot off the season, but we have found our right way to play in last half dozen games and we have got a few players back from injury is CMS to name one, yer we have some out but all teams miss certain players through injuries,

The season is over 46 games we've earnt our right to be here for these games so lets leave the negative thoughts at home and sing our hearts out tonight for the lads, one thing can't do anything about is on the pitch but we can make some noise in the ground, onwards and upwards !!

Up the Albion !!!!

You definitely deserve to be in the playoffs, the league doesn't lie after 46 games, irrespective of how close it was on the last day, you were the 6th best team in the league (and it was against Florist!). It's now a complete lottery, both teams and managers think they can win and that's what makes it so exciting, I cannot wait for tonight. Don't consider there to be too much pressure on either team considering the other two teams and their recent history, especilally QPR, having the wage budget of a champions league team! So we can just enjoy it.

Good luck lads.

Hi Adam.
Do you think that the Derby approach, or what seems to be their appraoch, of, 'we will score more than we concede so go for it every game,' has any baring on the number of goals you have shipped this season? Is it a problem at the back or maybe just that you tend to be more attack focused? Do you think McClaren will go all out for a win tonight or maybe show a little caution?

I think it's just a case of that we have much better attacking payers than defensive. McClaren fortunately has realised this and used it to our advantage, under Clough if we were winning 1-0 he'd always bring on a cb at the expense of a more attack minded player, normally at half time! Ultimately inviting pressure and 8/10 we'd concede and go on to draw or lose, hence not much progression. It's strange though as our cb jake buxton got player of the year! I think it must be a concentration issue as luckily this season (or most of it) we've been playing well and on the offensive, and as such when we have to defend they've switched off. Either way it's a problem that needs addressing what ever league we are in.

We have nothing to lose, we were never expected to be in this position due to our many injuries , so we can play totally relaxed - that's when most teams play their best football. Really looking forward to the evening, the atmosphere will be great.
