A stunning piece of fielding from James Tredwell denied Jack Leaning a maiden first class century on the third morning of Sussex’s clash with Yorkshire at Arundel Castle.
Leaning was on 99 when he drove Tredwell powerfully down the ground and was distraught to see the England spinner stick out his right-hand and take an incredible reaction catch.
The 20-year-old batsman, playing in only his fifth first class match, had batted for more than five hours and was hardly able to drag himself away from the crease.
It was a welcome reward for Tredwell, however, who has bowled with good control and now has figures of 2-82 from 35 overs on his Sussex debut.
There was also a well-deserved third wicket for Steve Magoffin who had bowled superbly yesterday as he dismissed the dangerous Aaron Finch for just three with a ball that pinned him on the crease.
Those breakthroughs frustrated Yorkshire’s hopes of building on their overnight position of 208-3 as they reached lunch on a rain-interrupted morning on 274-5.
Their hopes of going past Sussex’s total of 316 and establishing a significant lead rest largely on Jonny Bairstow who remains unbeaten on 69.
