Albion trio sign contracts

Inigo Calderon

Inigo Calderon

First published in Sport by , Chief sports reporter

Albion right-backs Bruno and Inigo Calderon and reserve keeper Casper Ankergren have become the first players to sign up to the Sami Hyypia era.

The trio, as expected, have all put pen to paper on the new one-year deals offered to them at the end of last season.

Hyypia has been given the low down on Spanish duo Bruno and Calderon and experienced Danish custodian Ankergren by head of football David Burke and first team coach Nathan Jones.

Hyypia said: "Casper, Bruno and Inigo have been important members of the squad in recent years and I am pleased they have agreed terms with club for another year.

"They're experienced heads with a lot of games between them, they know the Championship well and they give us continuity within the squad.

"I had a limited knowledge of all three, but David and Nathan have given me some sound input on the entire squad - including the three of them.

"Having had a chance to review a number of DVD's from last season, I can see their qualities and I am sure they'll continue to be key for us in the season ahead."

Not surprised, at their age moving on would only be to a lower club imo, Caldi deserves some involvement in the coaching staff as well, one of the most honest players around imo and could one day be a good manager.
Bruno will give us something one minute then give it away the next! God I hope we sign a quality keeper, because if not, no disrespect to Casper, our goals conceded will be a bit higher this coming season!

I can't see Casper as being a positive move. A good bloke clearly but still gives the defense more kittens than they need. Surely a real proof of positivity would be to sign a proven keeper with Walton as No:2. Or for that matter if he's that good why not trust Walton as our new No:1?

After all De Gea was only 18 after all when he was Madrid's No:1We either rate these guys or not and if they're good enough they are always old enough. Sami has said that age is only a number!

Makes him a perfect emergency number 3 then. You wouldn't easily sign a reliable equivalent who can add experience in the same way. So why make life complicated? Makes perfect sense.

I should make it clear that I think we need a new No1. Just don't see any point in letting Casper go, leaving 2 new keepers required, both better than him. (otherwise why let him go?).

Agree on him being third choice, get a decent keeper in and the other two alternate on the bench, like Brez and Casper last season. The wages saved on TK and Brez should allow a decent wage to attract a quality keeper.

What I saw was someone with great presence and self confidence. That's what I like to see in a keeper!

Can anyone who regularly watches the team deny that whenever CA or PB were playing there was a nervousness among the crowd and the defense?
