Albion want Lingard back

The Argus: Jesse Lingard impressed on loan for Albion last season Jesse Lingard impressed on loan for Albion last season

Albion want Jesse Lingard back from Manchester United.

And their hopes of re-signing the England under-21 international have been strengthened by Lingard’s apparent absence from United’s forthcoming trip to the United States.

Lingard scored four goals in 17 games on loan to Albion last season, including one at the Amex in the play-offs against Derby County, after signing at the end of February.

The Seagulls want the versatile striker back from Old Trafford, on a season-long loan this time, to boost their firepower and wide options.

Lingard starred on United’s pre-season tour to Asia and Australia last season under David Moyes before he was loaned out to Birmingham.

New manager Louis van Gaal’s squad for the visit to the States to compete in the International Champions Cup will not be officially confirmed until Friday.

But Lingard’s name did not appear on a provisional squad list released by the tournament’s organisers.

Paul Scholes and Gareth Southgate are big admirers of Lingard.

United legend Scholes believes he should have been chosen by Moyes ahead of Adnan Januzaj, while England under-21 boss Southgate has predicted a first team future at Old Trafford for Lingard.

Albion’s development team had the better chances but had to settle for a goalless draw against Cartagena at La Manga last night.

Trialists Danny Pappoe, George Cole and Ibou Touray all started again for the young Seagulls.

Centre-back Pappoe and midfielder Cole are both from Chelsea and left-back Touray from Everton.

Provided the terms of his loan are more flexible than they obviously were last season, I think JL would be a welcome addition. I'm sure Sami could use him well in the system he intends to play and his link up with KLL was begining to show promise. An intelligent player that always seems to find space, just game time, experience and stability required to make him shine.
But what do I know?

Yes, if he really is as good as some professionals suggest, then he should be able to hold his place in the team on merit. If he had to earn his place week in week out, it's likely he would show a bit more. No player should have a free ticket, let alone a kid. That just leads to complacency on his part and resentment from other players.

The prospect of getting Lingard back for the season doesn't exactly get me jumping out of my seat, I thought he was really poor in a few games last season. The fact he played ahead of our own Solly March was a little soul destroying and frustrating at times but possibly out of Oscar's control.

However, he seemed to pop up in the right place to score a few and he is probably another player more suited to a quicker counter-attacking game. Plus, Scholes must have seen something in him.

Only accept him back if there are no ties, such as minimum paying time, so Sami can choose the best team for the right game. Agree, Solly looked good in most games he played. On the plus side, he did score some goals, which were sadly lacking last season.

Good player and I would welcome him back but only if he is selected on merit. I think we would see a much better player if he had to fight for his place in the team. After all we wouldn't buy a player and guarantee his place every game because that only breeds mediocrity.
Paul Scholes rates him and he knows a thing or two about football. Would be a good assistant at the Albion.
Getting back to Jessie I think Sami would get more out of him if we play a more counter attacking style as anticipated. I hope we get the deal done. UTA

A good post which sums up my thoughts on Lingard especially your point about him being potentially better suited to a more up-tempo counter-attacking game that it seems SH s utilising.

Now there's a mouth watering prospect indeed - Paul Scholes as Sami's Assistant. Would love that but highly unlikely I think. He's very involved as co owner of that Salfords FC. Great idea though. I think the more really top class people we can have in the club the better!

I have read hereabouts that we should sell Ulloa and bring in Connor Wickham. I advocated getting him over a year ago, when he was not scoring for fun. Now, with a certain GP running the show up there I'm not sure we would get an easy deal - and certainly not sure he would welcome to (1) a return to the championship and (2) leaving the north east where he seems to be settled... We shall see... It really is depressing waiting for some good news and even more so reading some of the trash on these threads. Perhaps the Argus should suspend the thumbs up / down... It only serves to encourage morons and we appear to have them in abundance... Regardless UTA...!!!

If the plan is to break out from defense and midfield with pace rather than a slow build up from the back, a dozen passes and we reach the halfway line, we are going to need pace both on and off the ball, Lingard can give us that, as can Buckley, Solly and CMS. Solly and Lingard can both play in a wide role, and some are of a mind that we need an extra wide player.
Hyypia is going to need options both during a match and before it even starts, Lingard would add to his options.
Midfield, Stephens, Crofts and Lingard, play one of them, maybe two or all three. Buckley, Solly, Lingard and Kaz four wide options. Ulloa, CMS and Lingard, three with a strikers instinct to be in the right place at the right time.
I fail to see a negative for Hyypia if we can get the lad in for the season, and of course his place in the starting line up will be down to merit, no way Sami would have his hands tied for a whole season.

It will be interesting to see how Lingard develops this season whoever he ends up playing for. When he was playing for us he moved like a thoroughbred and worked hard for the team but his pass selection and accuracy was poor. In the hope that there is a lot more still to come I would welcome a season long loan as long as there were no strings attached.

I thought that he showed touches of class last year and will hopefully mature into a very good player.
For what it is worth I thought he is the only player I have seen for many years that ran and beat a man as easily as Peter Ward used to. All that was missing was the finish, but if you saw the game when he scored loads for Birmingham, in his first game for them I believe, the finish will be there as well given time. We saw it occasionally last year.

May be a gem! Time will tell. I love Leo but the fashion is for little quick finishers rather than the traditional big man 'up front'. I think we have a lot of talented youngsters eager to play 'one touch' and with CMS back and running at defences we may well be a revelation if they are allowed to express themselves. It will be then that players like Lingard may show their true ability.
