Craig Mackail-Smith continued his prolific pre-season form for Albion in Spain tonight.

The fit-again striker scored his third goal in as many friendlies for Sami Hyypia's side against Real Betis.

Mackail-Smith slotted Albion into an early advantage but they were eventually beaten 3-1 at the Pinatar Arena.

The former Peterborough marksman, on target previously against Lewes and Partick Thistle, controlled a shot from Jake Forster-Caskey to place Albion into an 11th minute lead with a clinical right-foot finish.

Striker Ruben Castro levelled for Betis just before the break and Jorge Casado put them ahead four minutes into the second half with a diving header.

Sergio Rodriguez made it 3-1 to the team relegated from La Liga last season with a shot in off a post 14 minutes from time.

Hyypia used all 18 players named on the teamsheet, including new signing Aaron Hughes for the last half-hour.

Leicester transfer target Leo Ulloa was joined on the absent list by Albion's other summer signing so far, midfielder Nzuzi Toko.

Albion: Ankergen (Walton 46); Bruno, Greer (Hughes 60), Maksimenko (Rea 46), Chicksen; Ince, Agustien (Harris 60), Forster-Caskey (Calderon 60), March, Buckley (Hunt 60); Mackail-Smith (LuaLua 46). Subs not used: None.

Gosh its getting harder & harder to remain positive for the upcoming season. Our squad is so much weaker than this time last season. Ulloa is obviously going just hope we spend the money we get for him on players, cant believe we would spend so much on a fantastic ground & training facility but not invest in the team but as every day goes past I get more worried.

This ongoing Leo saga is becoming a real bore now. I sincerely hope that it is resolved soon, which ever way it goes.

I would hope and fully expect whatever fee we get for Leo to go into the pot for Sami to spend.
We sold Ash, Adam, Liam and a development lad in January and not a penny was reinvested.
This time, as I say, I fully expect it go on the squad... Reason? Mr Barber stating more than once that we don't need to sell to balance the books.

I speak only for myself when I say that I will be hugely disappointed if we take yet another stride backwards this season.
I know about and agree with FFP.... No excuse with Leo money though.

It was only a friendly and of course the result doesn't really matter. However, the fact that we were comfortably beaten by a Spanish second division team shows that our team needs significant strengthening BEFORE we start playing league matches in 3 weeks time.

As has been said before, we have a super (expensive) ground, the biggest crowds in the Championship and now a superb (expensive) training facility. All very well but rather pointless unless we have the ambition to get to the Premiership.

Do we have that ambition or not, some of us are starting to have serious doubts. It's all very well to keep saying FFP, FFP but if we are to progress we need to invest money in genuine quality players. We've lost several good players, we've received a fair bit of cash, for Bridcutt and Barnes in particular, but we (i.e. the people who run the club) don't seem prepared to spend money on the quality players we need to move to the next level. It is starting to get rather worrying now.

Sky report refers to "a proven goalscorer". Strange words to use in an item about Chris O'Grady. 1 in 4 in Leagues 1 and 2.

Be fair - this time last year Betis had just finishe 7th in the top division. This is no worse than losing a meaningless pre-season friendly to Norwich or Fulham.

I do love how people want to ignore FFP, as if by doing so it will just go away. FFP is here, it is here for a bl00dy good reason and it needs to be adhered to.

Quite right
I get pelters sometimes for the reinvestment issue but that is the problem with many fans at the moment
We have given the board a long leash of trust in their decisions on behalf of the club and fully understand FPP constraints
However, there must be money in the kitty despite what they say and when Leo moves on as is likely, there should be a war chest available
There is a bit too much hard sell on the DS squad players at the moment although they are great talents ,they are not the answer
The Championship needs a mix of experience and youth, measured
Two up front,all day

Just got back to the hotel after a very enjoyable 10 days here in sunny Murcia. Tonights opposition were far the better side, especially when you consider they have only been back training for 1 week. Didn't help Albions cause when CMS & Buckley were removed after the break as there were no other natural forwards on the bench & the centre of defence looked very weak with Greer & Maksimenko 1st half & Hughes & Rae 2nd half. Strange move 2nd half when Bruno was moved from left back to right & Calderon was brought on to play in front of him.

Why not mention the stranglehold that OPEC have on oil prices, or the effects of globalization on the plight of the single mothers and the poverty stricken in Rochdale? You really are a moribund poster - you appear to spend most of your life putting a negative spin on everything - you must be a bundle of fun to know in real life.
