Hyypia hoping March will be fit for Albion Cup tie

Solly March has a back injury

Solly March has a back injury

First published in Sport by , Chief sports reporter

Albion boss Sami Hyypia hopes to have Solly March fit to offer an attacking spark in the Capital One Cup against Cheltenham at the Amex tomorrow night after his side drew a blank in their opening day setback against Sheffield Wednesday.

England under-21 international March missed Saturday’s 1-0 defeat with a back injury, so Hyypia handed fellow youngster Shamir Fenelon his debut for the Seagulls ahead of Will Buckley.

Hyypia said: “He (March) has some stiffness in the back. We didn’t want to take any risks with him, have him on the bench, then after ten minutes he has a problem and has to come off again. That would have been foolish, so we decided to leave it.

“I was hoping he would play but we tested it and he wasn’t able to. He is a very young player. I wouldn’t say he is key but he would be very important for us.

“Solly would have started if he was fit but then Shamir deserved his chance. He’d done well pre-season. I like it when players are doing well and working hard every day.”

Albion had Andrew Crofts sent-off early in the second half for a dangerous tackle on Sam Hutchinson following Giles Coke’s spectacular effort late in the first half for the visitors.

Hyypia said: “It’s not nice to lose but I liked the effort of everyone. The red card didn’t make it any easier but we kept going and probably deserved the equalising goal.

“We can take a lot of positives. The effort was there. Maybe in the final third the quality and the precision wasn’t always there. We made wrong decisions and when we did the right ones we maybe could have created a few more chances.”

Crofts, making his competitive comeback from cruciate knee ligament danage in January, faces a three-match ban after catching Hutchinson above his right ankle.

Albion’s debut keeper David Stockdale said: “I felt there was no intent to hurt the player. Even if his foot was raised I thought it was because the ball was off the ground.

“The other guy might have gone into his boot as well but if he has got his studs showing it might have been a red. I can’t really comment if I’d given it or not because I’m not a ref.”

If I was Stockdale I would be more concerned about being out of position for their goal....croft went in late and high and deserved to go...

Okay, so all today's offerings do is prove once again that The Argus subscribes to Seagulls Player. So many of their stories are just drawn directly from those interviews. Personally I'd rather have fewer threads and maybe a bit of investigative journalism?? Honestly, I could write most of the Argus stories from here!!

No wonder Sami hoping Solly fit. Am completely aware now why Sami cut such an un happy figure on saturday now. He new Buckley was off too.
Time for the club to come clean are we having a fire sale to cover our financial position because it seems that way.
At least be honest with us season ticket holders . If your not then expect to pay a heavy price.
How to build a club then destroy it under 18 months. Sorry v upset to see Buckley go , when fit our last real game changer. See why he was on bench now on saturday.
Barber and Burke how the ......you keep your jobs i will never know.

Sell Buckley, I think the club are working on the idea once FFP comes in there will be bargains to pick up, on low wages,
I heard Saturday we have two or three coming in from Liverpool, Ibe and Robinson , fastest player at Liverpool and the young left back who is highly rated, this works two ways .... We get some qulaity cheap, and it looks like hyypia is pulling the strings! Lol
I am very interested in the gate at the Amex this week, I would imagine a record low.. Barber was not open about season ticket sales, we picked up a few new ones when OG was appointed, I don't think a rush is likely this week! Taking the weds fans out of Saturday, and noting the amount of empty seats in the west stand. It's getting very quiet at the Amex..

I heard that Clayton was at the ground on Saturday also. Might mean nothing but who knows? On the same subject, I was talking to a Huddersfield fan mate of mine who reckons that Clayton is not all he's cracked up to be. They will only be slightly sorry to see him go. Bit lazy by some accounts.
We should be glad we're not in Huddersfields position already. Manager gone after one game due to lack of commitment from players. Mutual agreement with the board, it seems. His post match interview was devastating. See Sky Sports News. At least our players were trying even though it didn't work out. Greer MOM for me closely followed by Kaz.

No offence intended AN, but I hope you can see my point too, that I could also have written today's articles.

Could you clarify whether there has been a cooling off in the relationship between the Albion and yourselves recently? Many here think that may be the case. It would be really interesting to see your thoughts on that.

I heard Clayton failed to turn up for his medical at Boro so hopefully something happening here. Also your spot on with Greer, thought he was superb, also a mention in my view must go to O'Grady, he work so hard to link it together if only there was someone up there with him (CMS ?). I can't fault the effort but to be honest I am worried about the ability. If we had have gotten something out of the game it would only have papered over the cracks, now new signings are vital and plain for ALL to see,

I agree, but what concerns me is that some of the teams flaunting FFP rules (ie Bournemouth, Forest etc) are threatening to appeal the decisions if made against them, if this is the case where do we stand then, we all know how long an appeal can be drawn out for. I'm sure TB has looked into this but it would be interesting to know

Agree with that aswell. If they appeal an win it will make the hole FFP a joke. You also never know whether these clubs have people advising them on how to flout the rules so that they can get away with it. Sponsorship deals from companies they have financial links to etc !
