Albion target finally set to sign for Boro

First published in Sport

Albion target Adam Clayton is finally scheduled to complete a move to Middlesbrough.

According to the Middlesbrough Gazette the Huddersfield midfielder is due to have a medical today in the North-East at the third time of asking.

Clayton did not turn up for a medical a week ago amid Albion's interest after Middlesbrough and Huddersfield had agreed a £1.5 million fee rising to a potential £2 million.

Clayton failed to show for a medical for the second time on Friday evening.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka reportedly intervened and phoned Clayton to reiterate he wanted him - but also set a deadline for the deal to go through.

Boro are now hopeful it will be third time lucky, with Jacob Butterfield moving in the opposite direction for around £750,000.

I can either guess, we have not actually made an offer, if the lad did prefer Brighton as an option, as reported in the Yorkshire press. It would appear we tried to hay jack the deal,

Yes we need to comply with FFP , but do we have the right man in Burke?
Let's for one minute forget FFP .. Would you want a manager sacked if he lost player after player, who nearly signed?

As I said yesterday--IF he was at the Amex---he was almost doing a Grabban. Cannot see WHERE any new signings are going to come from. It seems no one wants to come to Brighton!! Like many others I am now beginning to get a bit disillusioned and feel we are in a worse position squad wise, than we were last season.Something is definitely not right at BHA these days. Burke says we must be Premiership ready--at this rate we will be ready for a very long time. NO NOT being negative, for once saying it as it is--nothing positive going on at all at the Club on the field---Sammi must wonder what he has let himself in for.

Burke doesn't just get players, he is the director of football operations who managed to achieve the best academy status for our centre at Lancing. Stop being so one dimensional in your criticisms.

Ha ha, I have wanted a quality academy for years, .. We have a nice building in lancing we have a nice stadium, but it's the quality of staff either coaching or on the pitch at the Amex that will shape success..
My point is this, since Gus left who have we signed that inspires the people who watch the team, customers/ fans

The gazette article in question actually says that Huddersfield refused to accept a further offer from Brighton saying they had agreed a deal with Middlesbrough. Perhaps a personal phone call from Sami would have encouraged the player to put pressure on Hudds to work with Brighton on a deal. He's probably got more chance of a promotion push at Midds anyway things seem good there with their Latin passionate manager.

Re Buckley going and lack of signings, I believe fans really will start losing interest soon if the club aren't careful. I wouldn't consider cancelling my season ticket but if the club has a mediocre season it will surely affect season ticket sales massively. Come on Bloom and co what are you playing at!!?

Bring in some news of a player or players that may be as good as Adam Clayton or maybe not so good but at least want to play for our club 100%
Would rather have a player like Caldi who plays with passion for the club and football rather than someone who is only interested in how much he or his agent can skim from the club.
I no they have to make a living in the short time they can play but there must be one or two out there that also put football first?

BHA miss out on another player. I am not too disappointed about this one as I personally think Stephens when fit could be a better player. I am more concerned that we sell a genuine 20 goal a season centre forward and whether directly or not replace him with a sub standard forward who would struggle to score 20 goals in the conference. I hope I am proved wrong. We looked good with Hughes and Greer Saturday but were too narrow and short of ideas in their half. If Buckley goes we will have lost all genuine width and with the exception of one chance Saturday Wednesday looked incredibly comfortable squeezing us in the middle. More signings needed. Still 20 days to go ... UTA

i find the constant speculation about players signing( or not) very frustrating especially when it seems we are losing out on good players and Clayton is a good player. It is disappointing to see teams around us progressing and building competitive squads when we seem to be regressing and selling ours. I have faith and trust in Bloom and Barber but my faith has been tested since January, selling good players and replacing them with mediocre players, the only exception being David Stockdale who is a more than able replacement for Kuz. The new club shop has the strap-line one club one ambition and I appreciate where we are compared to where we were, I was there through it all... but surely its better to be realistic if we are happy to be a mid/upper championship team then just say rather than all this premiership talk. The one thing that Burnley and Leicester had last year was consistency from the previous season and the nucleus of a squad. We seem to be selling our best players lately and I worry that unless we do some good business in the next three weeks we will be mid table at best, Wednesday made us look very ordinary on Saturday and they will be bottom 8, again I know its only the first game and its not panic stations but its a worry no?

The one thing that Burnley and Leicester had last year was consistency from the previous season and the nucleus of a squad. We seem to be selling our best players lately and I worry that unless we do some good business in the next three weeks we will be mid table at best, Wednesday made us look very ordinary on Saturday and they will be bottom 8, again I know its only the first game and its not panic stations but its a worry no? Who cares if we can't sign new players for toffee , and the best current players are all being sold?

I for one am bursting with pride that we have record replica shirt sales, a beautifully refurbished 1901 east lounge, and that lovely trio BBB are going to win another accountancy award for complying with FFP when no other club is bothering.

Yes Sireee, it's a mighty fine time to be an Albion fan.

Move on. UTA!
I don't know enough about him. I had never really noticed his name last season like some other names that you hear about. I have read that he is just after money, and will go to who offers more. Do we really want players like that?

This failure to act may be due to the drop in season ticket sales and the uncertainty about future revenue streams.

If season ticket sales have dropped by 2000 that means the club has 1m less than it had budgeted for.

At the forum Barber made the point that the drop in match day ticket prices was a trade off between giving season ticket holders a fair discount, but not having match day prices so high as to discourage new people to watch football as the club wanted to widen the fan base. That's how it was dressed up, however, I think the real reason for the drop in match day ticket prices was a panic move to make up for the loss in season ticket sales. If they can't get enough money in through season ticket sales they reduce the match day ticket prices to casual punters and former season ticket holders.

Behind the scenes I think there is a good deal of panic on the good ship Albion and financially the club is like a rabbit caught in the headlights not knowing whether to spend or save in case people cancel their tickets.

Meanwhile at clubs such as Forest and Derby expectations and gates are higher than last season

IMHO it is painfully simple , re-invest ALL the transfer money received for Ulloa any money from the possible sale of Buckley and ALL the promised budget for this season on new signings ,or face the chance that too many new STs will be lost for good next season , the 3-4000 that buy through the club on a game to game basis will also be gone . It`s not so much a case of speculate to accumulate , more a case of if the supporters don't see a return on their not insubstantial outlay ,they will simply not turn up ! I`m certainly not going to pay a fortune to the train company and spend 8 and a half hours on a train on a Saturday to watch Bloom`s Budget Babe`s loose to a team like Sheffield Wednesday !. Put it right NOW and in style ,or it will be a mountain to climb to return to the figures of the last two seasons .

Meanwhile at clubs such as Forest and Derby expectations and gates are higher than last season[/p][/quote]IMHO it is painfully simple , re-invest ALL the transfer money received for Ulloa any money from the possible sale of Buckley and ALL the promised budget for this season on new signings ,or face the chance that too many new STs will be lost for good next season , the 3-4000 that buy through the club on a game to game basis will also be gone . Put it right NOW and in style ,or it will be a mountain to climb to return to the figures of the last two seasons . tug509

This failure to act may be due to the drop in season ticket sales and the uncertainty about future revenue streams.

If season ticket sales have dropped by 2000 that means the club has 1m less than it had budgeted for.

Maybe if they had invested that 1m then the ticket sales wouldn't have dropped. Just a frustrated observation.

Reading the Middlesbrough Gazette story, it looks like Huddersfield's decision to take a ready made replacement from 'boro is key to them freezing us out? From their point of view, letting Clayton go to what may well have been his preferred option, would've left them high and dry, so perhaps an ultimatum was; 'it's them or no-one'? If they hold the cards on this, they've thrown their weight about.
Whatever the reality, it's another kick in the teeth for us.
I'm typing this through gritted teeth as it's generally against my nature, but the evidence of tacit failure in the transfer market is growing ever longer - and it's unimpressive. Given recent heavy losses, I don't expect us to spend everything we've gained in the last 6/8 months, but everyone knew the squad was thin at the end of last season and three months on - it still is.

Fair point. To be fair, my last comments take into account a 'done deal' for Clayton but there is always the possibility we're still working our butts off to turn it around, so we must sit and wait.
That said, I stand by my overview of transfer policy, although plucking this one out of the air wold be a step forward!

If you are Wickham, you'd ask yourself (at least) three questions:
1. Would I rather play in the Premiership or the bottom half of the Championship?
2. Which club pays the higher wages and bonuses: Sunderland or Brighton?
3. Which manager is the better tactician: Gus or Sammi?

It’s a no-brainer.

You wouldn't buy a ticket for the cinema before you knew what film was showing. Feel I've been tricked.
Lets be fair it wasn't great last season was it, not really sure how we managed to get to the playoffs, it said more about the state of the teams below us. But the three B's keep dangling the carrot of potential signings to get those season ticket sales going. £12m plus whatever Buckley brings in should mean some proper signings (not loans!). BUT IT WONT HAPPEN. Bloom will spend money on buildings he will not spend it on players and their wages. I am afraid FFP is just a smokescreen.
And what sort of gate tonight, I would suggest around 6k if they are lucky?

From the Middlesboro Gazette

"It is understood that Karanka personally intervened and phoned Clayton to reiterate he wanted him - but also set a deadline before he moved on.

The deal has showed Boro’s determination to land the coach’s targets after the signing of Tomas Meijas, Kike Garcia, Emilio Nsue, Damia Abella, James Husband and the return of Kenneth Omeruo for a second spell.

But Boro haven’t finished and are still working on other targets with moves for two more long term loanees from Chelsea close to completion."

Players in, more to follow, manager actively involved, club willing to keep fans and press informed of progress. All in total contrast to the total lack of information or activity coming from the Amex.

"I can't let him go. I can't. There must be some way to bring him back. Oh, I can't think about this now! I'll go crazy if I do! I'll think about it tomorrow. But I must think about it. I must think about it. What is there to do? What is there that matters? The Amex! Home. I'll go home. And I'll think of some way to get him back. After all... tomorrow is another day!"
Excellent!!!

If I remember correctly Rhett you were a 'blockade-runner'. You must know how to get through as tight defence. Any chance of you sihning?

Very sad to say that I'm really starting to use faith in Tony Bloom. I'll quickly acknowledge that he has done wonders in creating a magnificent infrastructure at the club. However I am beginning to believe that he is simply out of his depth when it comes to creating and marketing the product (the playing team) to his customers. I might have the fanciest shop on the high street but if I stock it with s**t products, then my business will fail as the customers will pass on by.

The past year has demonstrated to me that there is something very wrong in process of putting a good product on the shelf. Blame may be put on Burke and Barber but ultimately the responsibility lies with the man who heads the company. Sadly, I have to admit that Tony Bloom is showing weakness in this area as he doesn't seem to be willing to drop the hammer when it is needed.

All this talk about 'we'll be happy when we see the players that will be here' seems to be a lot of wishful thinking. Even if they do manage to bring players in before the transfer and loan windows close, I fear it will be a case of too little, too late. At the end of the day, my faith in the management of BHA has been slowly eroded week by week and as we sit right now, its becoming harder to retain any real optimism about our future, at least for this year.

Perhaps for the sake of the customers shelling out their hard-earned money to support the club, the time is approaching that Tony needs to either step up and get tough (himself) about the product he is putting out.....or put someone at the top who perhaps knows more about what it takes to give the paying customers what they want. I don't believe the customers want mediocrity and from what we've seen so far, that's about all we're getting.

Over to you Tony.....you are the man that can change all this. Show us that you do 'get it' and can strike a fair balance between sensible fiscal restraint and a good product that will satisfy your paying customers.

19 days to go in the transfer window...
You can look at our chances either negatively or positively. I actually think this scenario works in our favour. Boro aren't actually able to offer a straight 2m, they have to throw in a player whereas we can offer straight cash. Offer an extra 1/4m and huddersfield will overlook they don't have a replacement because the extra money will make finding a replacement easier.

Clayton can hold out provided he thinks Bloom & Co are determined and won't leave him in the lurch. Huddersfield will get scared that if they don't agree a Brighton move soon, both clubs will lose interest and they miss out

Lot of dissatisfaction both here and on NSC.

With our new(ish) stadium, new training facilities and high season-ticket prices comes increased expectation. The club have raised the bar...and now they're falling below it with the product they're putting out on the field.

Not a day goes by, it seems, without a report stating we have missed out on yet another of our transfer targets. How long before we start panic buying? In other words, signing our second and third-choice targets? IMO, Clayton, Ward and Baldock was not exactly aiming high in the first place.

What will the mood be like if we lose to Cheltenham tonight, or fail to register a win at either Birmingham or Leeds? Right now, I can't be confident of beating anyone. Where are the goals going to come from?

I do agree with the sentiment from many posters that more needs to happen to show us all that something acutally is being done. I'm not sure about the demands for press releases and the like, I'd rather just see a player being signed. I don't mind if it's someone from the UK that we can look at and say 'good signing'. I don't mind if it's an unknown from across the globe as long as they come and want to be here and perform well. LU came from nowhere to be one of our best strikers (opinions will vary on that of course) and I would welcome a few additions along those lines. 18 days and counting!

They don't need to be Prem quality, just good enough to get us out of this division. Prem quality is too expensive but we can buy it once promoted.

Regarding Clayton, Burke & Co may or may not be mugs, but if Boro and their manager think he's good enough then I'll take that as a good enough endorsement

I like many probably accept that this season is going to be a mid-table affair at best, but what does worry me is the potential loss of the floating support.

Yes, we may have got some of the biggest gates and averages over the last 2/3 years but I think the Amex factor especially in the first season was partly the reason for this. We have to accept (as like many clubs but especially ours I think) there is a huge floating crowd that we could lose if the club start to slip in the table this season or next. The potential loss of revenue could be huge if just a few thousand didn’t renew next season. I for one don’t want to see a wonderful stadium only half full like we used to see with clubs like Wigan when they were in the Premiership and on MOTD.

I say ‘floating’ support as I really believe this to be the case. Yes, Withdean was sparse and pretty bleak but even when the capacity rose close to 9000 we rarely filled it, which tells you all you need to know about many supporters out there. I know many said they wouldn’t return until we had a decent stadium as we do now but this shows the lack of loyalty many thousands of so called fans have (fair-weather or Johnny come lately's), as I believe if you are a real fan you would follow your team in the good times and bad unless personal circumstances prevented you from going.

To this end TB & PB really do have to consider the potential loss of large numbers of ST holders in the future if they fail to invest at least some of the funds raised over the last year. Every club has their share of fair-weather supporters, but whether we like it or not we need to keep as many of ours as possible. So please can we see some positive news regarding squad strengthening soon! And yes, I will be there tonight whoever Sammi plays.

We could actually live with lesser targets if at least club was honest and said...look we went for it under Gus and we failed so now until books are square we have to pay a price for that.
To be fair to Arsenal and Wenger they did tell fans they could not afford to buy the best for a few years until ground paid for !

Completely agree with your final point.
Our club seems to want everyone to tune into the official website to the exclusion of other channels, but the sterile nature of the content doesn't offer a reasonable step forward in information as far as I'm concerned. I don't expect the club to put tittle tattle on it's own forum, but there's little reflection of an active, communicative club either.
Sure, you can view SH's press conference and judge him for yourself without third party spin, but you'll have to pay for the privilege. And interestingly, there are no reflection of that press conference in the Argus (at least not on this website.)
Were they there? Are they permitted entry? Bearing in mind everything that's going on ( or isn't) it's all very odd.
And if Buckley goes, the imbalance between players out and players in, will, as it stands, put even greater pressure on an already threadbare squad.
Like I say, all very peculiar....

So if the DoF can't improve the side, then isn't he surplus to requirements?
If he is involved in the Academy, as someone has mentioned, make him Director of the Academy, and leave the vitally important work of player recruitment to someone who knows what they are doing.

Yet again the game tonight is as far as I can find not being shown live anywhere.
Although I support the Albion and have done for more than 50 years I have to say what we need tonight is to loose yes loose then maybe someone if there is anyone who has control inside the club will stand up and say enough is enough, you,you and you are not doing a good enough job for us so goodbye.
Something has to be wrong within the club as we just do not seem to be able attract quality players in numbers, not 4 or 5 but even two would be a result. Our best striker has gone and CMS at I beleive three millioin does not even get to start the first game of the season?
Time for a statement from the chairman and a true statement not a cover story written for make beleive land.
Other clubs without half the facilities we have to offer to players are signing new players, so come on Albion lets here some truths from those who are supposed to be in charge!!!

Very true. As an example Bournemouth lost their top striker in the summer but have replaced him with Wilson. With other signings they are building a team and are doing ok. They are building whereas we are asset stripping. However I bet they'll fall foul of FFP.
We are clearly going a different route. Only time will tell!

btw It 's 1900 hrs and no team news re tonight's game.
I assume the game is on tonight.

dont understand why Adam Chicksen cannot get a start in our team at left back. If Karl Robinson (mk dons boss, who is a very good manager) was our manager he would certainly be playing him. he was devastated to lose him as a player when he signed for us. i also doubt whether Adam Chicksen would have chosen to sign for us if he thought he was going to sit on the bench for the next 3 seasons.

on another note it looks as though Chris Wood is going to Wolves, as reported by Sky Sports. surely CW could do a job for us? in fact he would be an ideal replacement for Ulloa.

Once again....too late. We're left twiddling our thumbs. I agree, he could have been a useful addition.

Yes we need to comply with FFP , but do we have the right man in Burke?
Let's for one minute forget FFP .. Would you want a manager sacked if he lost player after player, who nearly signed?
I've said it here and on other forums, Burke has to go.
Signing quality players in today mercenary world of agents requires charisma, Poyet had it and he got players to sign who otherwise would have not given the Albion a second thought.
Have to admit that at the time i didn't poyet was right about hitting the ceiling but I'm worried that he may have been.
Of course the club cannot ignore FFP and spend money like water and where the need for better man than Burke is absolutely essential, to persuade quality players that brighton is the place to be and where things are going to happen.

Burke doesn't just get players, he is the director of football operations who managed to achieve the best academy status for our centre at Lancing. Stop being so one dimensional in your criticisms.
Come on Dingbat, are you serious, or is your full name Dingbat Burke?
