Albion have confirmed the signing of Portuguese under 21 international Joao Carlos Teixeira on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

The attacking midfielder will link up with his new team-mates tonight at the club’s hotel base in the West Midlands and be available to face Birmingham City tomorrow.

Boss Sami Hyypia has exploited his contacts at Anfield, where he played for ten years, to add a creative edge to his squad.

Hyypia said: "We are delighted to have brought Joao in for the season and we are very grateful to Liverpool. It's something we have been working on for a short time, and I am pleased to be able to welcome Joao to the club.

"The reports I have seen on him are very positive and my former colleagues at Liverpool have told me he is a very bright young prospect who is held in high regard at the club at all levels.

"Joao is an attacking player who likes to be on the ball and do his best work in the final third of the pitch. I hope he will bring that extra edge to the team and our play and give us an extra dimension.

"We still plan to further strengthen the squad ahead of the transfer deadline and there is still some work to do. We have targets, we know the areas we need to strengthen and we are making progress."

Albion chief executive Paul Barber has also reassured fans that work continues to strengthen the squad ahead of the transfer window closing at 11pm on September 1.

Barber said: "Joao is the fifth target we have secured this summer and work continues on our remaining prospects as we move in to the final couple of weeks of the transfer window. Patience is key as we continue to focus on our main targets."

Happy with this. If we sign Paddy McCourt too then I think we would have good competition for the creative midfielder spot.

Hopefully this puts to bed any further thoughts of Sami walking. I believe Sami to be a good, honest, respectable guy and I don't think for one second that he would have sold our club to Young Joao if he was thinking of moving on.

I'm hopeful that more signing will arrive in the very near future.

Fair point about Hyypia. If he's taken things into his own hands,(perhaps through frustration?) he's made a very strong statement to others.

It would appear clubs are waiting till we target a player then saying to themselves "he must be good if Brighton want him!" then offering silly money to land them.
Maybe the powers that be are better at finding class players than we give them credit for!
Hopefully, more on way.

Agree that patience is sometimes required but equally so is decisiveness at the right point. Albion allowed the Ward issue to drag on all summer, eventually paid pretty much what always been asked but by then others (Burnley) had spotted the opportunity.

So sometimes speed is of the essence.

There we go guys, as has been said previously they will come and we will be ok - the revolution may take a time and patience but it will come. We were luckily in the sense that Oscar done well without getting shot of many players seeing as it's normally the case that with a new manager comes massive change. With Sami we are investing in him long term and doing it the right way I feel. All the time producing a sustainable club, one that will be competitive for many years to come. It is understandable that frustrations are rife but the level is staggering and not warranted! Wait and see where we are in two weeks time. The futures bright - the futures blue and white!!

Mr Barber, the Sultan of Spin. On a positive note, I welcome this signing and am genuinely excited to see him play, well done Sami. He's another year older now, bit more muscle on him, little bit wiser, and for me potentially a good signing; young, hungry and Liverpool paid just short of a million for him a couple of years back with the extras.

Agree it might take him a while to get used to the hustle and bustle of the Championship, so I'm not expecting fireworks from him early days. Sometimes the kids just need a bit of game time & they suddenly come on leaps and bounds (look at Ince), hence I'm not too bothered he only played two games for Brentford last season.

Will do for starters, lets see Jack Robinson next Sami!

Sometimes the kids just need a bit of game time & they suddenly come on leaps and bounds (look at Ince), hence I'm not too bothered he only played two games for Brentford last season. Will do for starters, lets see Jack Robinson next Sami! PaulJo

These players were all returned to parent club ,sold or released since January 2014 . The 4 to come in are : Toko ,Stockdale ,COG ,Hughes .

One slight negative I noticed was that during his loan spell at Brentford he only made two substitute appearances and was then sent back after 28 days although the initial intention was that he would stay for four months. On the flip side he was involved in four or five consecutive matchday squads in the closing stages of last season albeit making only one appearance.

Only reason he only played 2 games at Brentford was because of their style of play at the time....lack of passing game....that was a quote by their Manager
Forced himself into Liverpool team at the end of last season

The panic signings have begun already. Miss out on Clayton – a proven midfielder at Championship level – so we then bring a kid in on loan instead.

The lad may well be a star in the making but is he what we need right now? Surely an experienced left-back and a proven goalscorer should be our priorities?

Remember how excited we all were about the two youngsters we brought in on loan from Manchester City – Assulin and Razak. how did that work out?

Sorry, but after banking 14 million in transfer fees, I'm not going to be dancing in the streets at the news that we've signed an unproven wunderkind on loan.

A few good loan players could still save our season.
If our money only stretches to average players as permanent signings, that could be why there is no incoming activity. It looks like Sami has veto'd Burke's list, and is going after his own players.
There is no major advantage to owning players.
Which players were most use to us over the last couple of seasons, Bridge and Ward, or Hoskins and Agustien?
If a few quality loan players can turn our season around, then the end justifies the means.

Basically Sami with his connections and the limited squad so far cobbled together will all have to pull together and make up for the deficiencies of the 3B's. We are looking for the players to step up to the plate and perform above and beyond the call of duty. That can happen and we'll all be surprised if it does

No doubt if they pull all the stops out and do well this season, the 3B's will give themselves a most undeserved pat on the back

Of course there is a lot of negativity on here right now. Our football team is in tatters. Would you be happy if someone came round to your house and removed half your furniture?

If your ark was run by the three wise Bs, the animals sure as heck wouldn't be going in two-by-two. One of them would have been sold by now.

Come on, seriously, that's a bit ridiculous.

A bloke like this lad probably just wants a run of games for a decent enough team that likes to pass the ball through midfield. We fit the bill and Sami (or Mr Burke...ahum) have used a connection at Liverpool to get him. Let's face it, we pass the ball to death, so he should feel well at home and not have to worry about the ball being hoofed over his head as could be the case more in League One.

Yes, some players do still want to come here, but it's a particular type of player now and their reasons which are bit worrying for people who want the club to get promoted any time soon:

CO'G - from a relegated club so anything but League One please, thank you.
Hughes - at my age, just give me decent enough Championship gig
Stockdale - a nice sideways move please where I can be the guaranteed number 1 choice
Toko - chance to play in England? Yes, please.

The guys who are better players and/or with loads of Premiership ambition are, unfortunately, probably going to look at Derby, Forest, Blackburn, Norwich, Cardiff, Middlesbrough and a few others before us. They can see all the good players we have let go and, rightly or wrongly, will make a judgment on which way they believe the club is heading over the next 12-24 months. It's only a short career and they can't necessarily wait to TB's 5-10 year plan to bear fruit.

It'd be interesting to see if Dale Stephens would come here if he was available for a move now. Maybe, maybe not...

Look, I'm a fan, right. Saying all this is not somehow being disloyal. I'd like us to get promoted. I'd absolutely love us to do a Burnley or a Leicester and go straight up. But the omens aren't good and we just don't have good enough players IMO.

Hope the Portuguese lad turns out to be the new Vicente (who doesn't get injured).

I've read a lot of comments on here over the last few weeks, and to an extent I agree with them. The dealing with Ward was not only greedy, it was idiotic. Something clearly isn't right with our recruitment (aside from Hyypia of course), but luckily Hyypia seems to be dealing extremely well with this and he has soften the blow with this loan signing.
He needs more freedom to negotiate deals though rather than leaving it to the *expletive*s at the top.

Joao has the potential to be the most creative player we've seen in a Brighton shirt and should be a fantastic signing, and it is 100% thanks to Hyypia.

I hope for our sake and his that he seizes this opportunity to prove himself.

Welcome Joao!!

I recall when Hyppia was appointed, some said his connections at Liverpool might get us a player or two on loan, but a doomonger know-it-all dismissed that as cr*p. Well.

Yep. I'd wager the failure on Clayton saw Sami take the bull by the horns. As someone else has said (MBTS?) Sami's quote saying we've been working on it for a short while speaks volumes. He'd had enough and rang his mates rather than leave another one to the committee.
And while we're on it, if COG was really "a target" at the end of the season, then we set the bar relatively low. No disrespect but after losing at Derby, he wouldn't have been the sort of player to earmark for an improved campaign this year.
We're making it up as we go along. But this lad from Liverpool, courtesy of the manager, seems very appealing. Surely there's a wider implication....

You may have convinced yourself everything is normal but we all know the three of you have royally screwed up the pre-season transfer activity.

Name the 16 players we've let go since the end off the season then, you can't count the players who came to us on loan, they where always going back to there clubs that's what loaning players means, we let some go in may apart from Orlandi, everyone else was surplus to requirement, Thomas wanted to get back in the prem but has not got a club, to say we've lost sixteen players is ridiculous,
Up the Albion!!
I did not say since the end of the season ,I said we got rid of 16 players ,the list is :
Bridcutt ,Barnes ,Barker ,El Abd ,Upson ,Lopez ,Hoskins ,Brezovan ,Andrews ,Rodriguez ,Orlandi ,Ward ,Ulloa ,Dickenson ,Kuszczak ,Lingard .

These players were all returned to parent club ,sold or released since January 2014 . The 4 to come in are : Toko ,Stockdale ,COG ,Hughes .
you might want to rethink your, 'in list,' as you have gone back to Jan 2014, a time when we were still playing matches. Were not JFC, Solly and Ince all still considered DS players, they ait now. When did Rodders join us, on basicaly was a trial period, if he did well could have got a contract, he didn't and didn't. Hoskins ahs gone, but mate, he was not playing last year due to injury. Heck, you might as well add CMS to the IN list, as he too had been out for 98% of the saeason.

I am sure the Portugeezer will be an asset to the squad but he is young and inexperienced, to be honest we have quite a few young inexperienced players of our own coming up through the ranks, and it is good to see. I just think that a few experienced heads in certain positions might be required, losing Upson is a bigger loss than Ulloa in my opinion, his influence both on and off the pitch cannot be under estimated. There were plenty of these players out of contract around during the summer in just the positions we need urgent cover but we were very slow to react. I suggest this might be due to our reluctance to pay the required salaries as per the Ward scenario. For instance George McCarthy was released by West Ham, a good solid pro played over 30 first team games last year, a NI international, a steady eddie in the mould of Ward but would need something like £15k a week to attract. I can hear the collective intake of breath and' He's not worth thatl, he's very average etc etc BUT get real that is the market rate these days and to compete you have play the game. I know it is unpalatable but if you want Premiership and all that it brings there is a price to paid. I am not sure BHA want it, we the fans do, but the board are scared of getting to the promised land and all the risks involved and ruining the good house keeping strategy they have in place. Football is big business these days and whatever you think of them QPR have taken there fair share of risks and short cuts but find them selves in the premiership in a rubbish stadium with a poor fan base. How badly do we want it, you pay your money you get the rewards.

The fact is that in Amex season one Buckley was simply spectacular. Confidence. Shooting boots on. Midas touch. It took Gus ten games longer than most fans to spot this!!

By season two as the injuries came in he was still good but continually hampered - erratic. Stop start.

By season 3 he was still much loved by the fans for the potential that he brought to a game - more injuries - shooting boots broadly gone (see stats), confidence lower (all those injuries), rarely took on (let alone beat) his man and whilst still supplying some excellent crosses for assists, apart from those really biased and loving the Doncaster opener still and those earlier matches of season one, not quite the player we all felt he could be. Shame. It'll prove to be OK business.

Good luck in the PL and thanks for what you did Will. But it's not a complete tragedy unless one still wears the rose tinted spectacles. Certainly v v close re who we would be better to have kept and who changed games more for the better last season - Will or Kaz. I'd say Kaz. £2.5 million is good. let's see how many games he's played come May 19th ....

Let's get another stylish/ interesting midfielder and a proper, out and out, talented striker + now it's not Ward, somewhere there too.

Time for the fans to get louder and more supportive too. It's nothing special noise wise in The Amex most of time. Certainly it'd not strike fear to opponents 9%+ of the time!!

UTA!!

I think sometimes we are too quick to criticise and too slow to praise. One moment we complain that the club doesn't communicate with the fans and the next when they do we pick holes in what they tell us.
TB about a week ago asked that we wait until the Transfer Window has closed before we pass judgement on how successful BHA has been in signing new players. As I have posted before I will do so and trust that when the time comes one will be pleased with the results.
Credit is due at this time to SH for keeping his cool in difficult circumstances eg the Ward setback (I am beginning, to think Burnley got the worse of the bargain - the Wolves fee of £500,000 surprised me).

Patience I give you two weeks to deliver on your promises. KEEP THE FAITH
Onwards and Upwards with SH and the Albion.

You're absolutely right but that is the nature of what happens when the communication is neither consistent or informative.
They're currently "paying" for a lack consideration and for me, that's a fundamental fault at present.

I don't know what the Argus did to that ?. I did not say since the end of the season ,I said we got rid of 16 players ,the list is :

I understand your concerns Tug, but I don't think we are as low on numbers as 1st appears
With the new signing our 1st team squad is 24 players.
Admittedly that does include two new youngsters (Rea & Harris) but then your list includes Barker & Dickenson who never featured.
An ideal 1st team squad needs to be about 28 players.
So we are 4 short. And as it stands 4 important players
Striker to replace Ulloa
attacking midfielder/winger (The loan player looks pretty good from the video on youtube)
Left back and possibly central defender.
your list....
Bridcutt =Toko (or Ince)
Barnes= O'grady
Upson= Hughes
Kusczak= Stockdale
Lingard= Teixeira
Brezovan= Walton
Barker,Dickenson,Hos
kins, Rodders never really played
Lopez & Andrews were slagged off most weeks on this forum
That leaves Ulloa, Ward, Orlandi & Buckley & El Abd
Maybe this year Chicksen & Maksi may break through to cover for Ward & El Abd
last season Orlandi & Buckley were always injured.

A top striker , A creative midfielder and a quality left back and maybe a young loanee should see us competitive again.

WE still have 2 weeks before we reach TB's deadline
Let's hope Sammi can use his contacts to clinch these deals

Tug - much as I admire your passion for the Albion, I do think your logic is a little suspect here.

Firstly - you count Dickenson and Barker who were development squad players, but don't count the two development squad players we signed following trials this summer.

Secondly - You missed Dale Stephens as an addition.

Thirdly - Rodriguez and Lingard were temporary replacements for Barnes so you are double or triple counting the departures.

Fourthly - Walton has been promoted from the development squad to replace Brezovan.

So yes, there is still a shortfall, but it's nowhere near as big as you think.

Look, I hate to be negative, but really we have no idea if this kid is any good or not. He's only played 3 senior games, 2 of which were for Brentford who sent him back to Liverpool early. Hyypia has clearly never seen him play. I hope we're not locked into keeping him for the whole season because presumably we're paying some, if not all of his wages. I hate to be doom and gloom, but we need more proven performers than this.

He is highly rated at Liverpool, and having watched some video footage on you tube, I am excited about him
With regard his time at Brentford, Liverpool recalled him..........

" On 14 September he made the first professional appearance of his career in a 4–3 victory at Tranmere Rovers, coming on as a substitute for George Saville. He then made his second appearance on 23 September as a substitute for Martin Fillo in a 2–0 home defeat to Leyton Orient. However, as Brentford fell further down League One, manager Uwe Rösler admitted that due to the team's downturn in form, he could no longer guarantee the game time Liverpool expected for Teixeira. The loan was therefore terminated early by Liverpool on 7 October"

Exactly. Brentford played him for 2 matches ( in League one), didn't like the look of him, and told Liverpool he wasn't going to play anymore. Liverpool may have 'terminated the loan' but Brentford effectively sent him back early. I hope I'm wrong, but this kid isn't going to transform our season.

Have just watched an interview with the lads u-21 coach on redman.tv and other tube footage. Looks like a good prospect, despite his size is able to shield the ball, is not afraid of a tackle, looks up and can spot a pass and deliver it. Oh and he has a decent shot too. The downside is he will need time to adjust and will not be an instant impact, only time will tell. If Stevie G rates him thats good enough for me.
As always, forever hopeful.

Tend to agree one good signing doesn't make up for the ones that got away. Been to much reliance on loan signings.
Should never again let so many players contracts run out at the same time..
Why have the last three managers been relatively new to management?
Was it master stroke from TB or that no established manager will accept not having control on who is bought. After all it is the manager who will go if the results are bad not the 2 B's.
Accept at the time and being at Withdean GP was a good choice.
