Albion closing on Villa defender

Joe Bennett

Albion are expected to make a loan swoop for Aston Villa full-back Joe Bennett.

The 24-year-old was believed to be undergoing a medical with the Seagulls this afternoon.

Bennett has slipped down the pecking order at Villa Park following Ryan Bertrand's loan spell last season and this summer's arrival of Aly Cissokho, and appears ready to move on in the search for regular football.

His chances have been limited since his £2.75million arrival in the midlands from Middlesbrough, where he emerged from the Teesside club's renowned Academy two summers ago.

He has had a medical today so we all just need to wait for the results

Bennett was massively out his depth in the premier league, I hope he has upped his game because he was a total liability there. I appreciate the gulf of quality can be huge at times but this compared to Ward and Bridge is slightly disappointing.

Good signing. AfiL - we are NOT in the premier league. Bennett had a good record at this level and added experience will have made him a better player. The key though is can he play Sami's idea of a full back role which is a long way from the tradituonal.

Still 10 days to go and if this deal goes through looks more and more like TB is a man of his word. I'm getting exited to see how these new guys are going to fit in and boost morale plus increasing depth.. Good news and nice reading the Leeds blog gushing about our class!! Thanks for that! Sami's warriors are lining up..UTA!!

If it goes through he will need a lot of support from Sami and more senior members of the defence... I hope he gets it and that he does well. The emergence of Adam Chicksen may well provide the incentive he needs. It is fairly obvious looking at his record at Villa that he is not the finished article but that doesn't mean to say he can't improve. Let's hope so. I reluctantly share the sentiment expressed by the Albion fan in London. Fingers crossed it all works out. UTA...!!!

A villa supporter I know doesn't rate him, came with high expectations but failed to deliver and his career has stagnated. Reckons he isn't up to championship standard either. Sounds about right for the albion, it's become like a charity for unwanted players.

Agreed, the premier league was a step too far for him at 22, and he struggled in a poor team, then had his confidence shattered after a cruel online forum. Still only 24, and a proven performer at championship level.

From memory I think Ward was fairly mediocre for the first half of the season and a disappointment after Bridge, but really picked up after that and became Mr Dependable - still not worth all the fuss over his drawn out resigning though.
