Albion boss Chris Hughton has added more experience to his support staff by bringing on board Ewan Chester as chief scout.

The highly respected and vastly experienced Chester worked with Hughton at Birmingham and Norwich after over 20 years with Glasgow Rangers.

His arrival coincides with the appointment of fellow Scot Colin Calderwood as Hughton’s assistant.

Chester has already begun his new role as a key member of recruitment head Paul Winstanley’s scouting team, which also includes Darren Wrack, Ian Pearce and Jamie Johnson. He was part of the group plotting Albion’s strategy in the final hours of the transfer window on Monday evening.

Hughton said: "I have been impressed by the sophistication and quality of the club's recruitment set-up so far, and I am delighted that we are further enhancing the team by bringing Ewan into our scouting department - a vitally important area in any football club.

"Ewan has got a wealth of knowledge and experience having worked before at Glasgow Rangers for a number of years, as well as Fulham and Birmingham and Norwich, where I had the pleasure of working closely with him."

Chester was linked with Chelsea in-between two stints at Norwich. He also had two spells at Rangers, first under Graeme Souness and later Walter Smith, during which the Glasgow giants won 15 titles and 35 trophies.

Albion chief executive Paul Barber said: "Ewan has great experience and football knowledge. He is very well connected in the game and has skills that complement our existing team.

"Ewan's previous close working relationship with Chris is also a huge asset to our club and will further help us to identify the type of players that fit Chris's style of play and system."
