Sussex's star two miler is back.

Sire De Grugy's Cheltenham trial ended in smiles for the Moore clan after the horse won the Rifles Handicap Chase Supporting Care for Casualties at Chepstow.

A clear round of jumping saw last season's champion chaser cruise to victory ahead of three rivals by seven lengths this afternoon (Saturday).

Gary Moore’s stable star faced a real test as he gave away up to 20lbs to his competitors on his return to handicap company.

But partnered by Moore’s son Jamie, who has ridden the horse in all of its 26 career starts, the duo were not asked any serious questions and are now firmly back in the Cheltenhem Festival frame.

Jamie said: "You could see he came up out of my hands a couple of times, which he never really did at Newbury. He's back on song now. Grey Gold is a good horse, but he put him in his place.

"He travelled well and coming up the straight I was thinking 'this is him' and I was buzzing. I gave him a couple of flicks and he got a bit tired at the last, but that was probably giving the weight away.

"Last season we were very lucky, this season it's gone a bit Pete Tong. I wouldn't swap him for anything at Cheltenham. I love him to bits."

De Grugy finished ahead of Richard Lee-trained Grey Gold (9/4) and Dan Skelton's Mr Grez (25/1).

The Paul Nicholls-trained Far West laboured in last.

Sire De Grugy is now into 7/2 from 7/1 to reclaim his Queen Mother Champion Chase title at the festival in two week's time.
