A UNION leader wants a Government inquiry to investigate the purchase of one of Scotland's main dairy products companies by its arch-rival.

Mr Sam Harty, Glasgow district secretary of T&G Scotland, said the acquisition of much of Scottish Pride's business by Wiseman Dairies could lead to soaring milk prices.

Scottish Pride collapsed with debts of #40m last month after losing a series of supermarket milk contracts to its rival.

The receiver announced at the weekend that Wiseman Dairies had paid #4.7m for Scottish Pride's Fresh 'n' Lo brand and a number of its depots.

Mr Blair Nimmo, of KPMG Corporate Recovery in Scotland, said the sale would protect 120 jobs at depots in Rutherglen, Carlisle, Dumfries, Stranraer, Annan, Saltcoats, and Dalbeattie.
