Stand-in Eastbourne boss Trevor Geer admits he is surprised and impressed by the new-look team - after watching wins home and away.

The long-serving team manager officially stepped down in the winter but agreed to take charge for the opening weeks of this season because successor Glenn Martin is away.

Eagles have opened with two successes over Kent Kings, including their first away win since June 2012.

Geer, who had reservations about the switch to the National League, said: "I'm surprised how good it is.

"Okay, the race times are maybe three seconds slower over the four laps but the racing is superb and there are some good young riders there.

"Richard Andrews is a good rider, the young grasstracker Georgie Wood has done well.

"Kelsey Dugard had a win and a good second at Kent but then he came off in his third and didn't feel up to doing his last ride.

"With more experience he will be putting even more wins together.

"And Bradley Wilson-Dean almost looks too good for this league.

"If they keep the kids coming through, I think that is what supporters like to see.

"The other thing I like is how quickly we get through the races.

"In the Elite League there would be delays and messing about and riders trying to psyche each other out.

"These boys just can't wait to get out there."

Eagles were backed by more than 100 travelling supporters at Kent as the early-season feelgood factor continues.

The club host the Championship of Sussex today (3.30pm) before league tests at home to King's Lynn next Sunday and away to champions Cradley a week on Wednesday.

Today's line-up: David Mason, Richard Andrews, Marc Owen, Bradley Wilson-Dean, Danny Warwick, Georgie Wood, Kelsey Dugard, Niall Strudwick, Charley Powell, Nick Laurence, Adam Sheppard, Danny Ayres, Sam Darroch, Saul Bulley, Sam Heath, Ryan Terry-Daley.
