Albion skipper Gordon Greer says Lewis Dunk should have been player of the season.

Fans voted for Inigo Calderon ahead of Greer’s centre-half partner, who is top scorer with seven goals.

Greer told The Argus: “If you asked me who was player of the year, no disrespect to Inigo Calderon, but I would have chosen Lewis Dunk because he started the season unbelievably and plus he’s still the top scorer in the team.

“When you look around the country, the top scorers always get player of the year. He’s done great and it’s an achievement on its own to be top scorer as a centre-back.”

Dunk, 23, is poised for his 44th appearance of the season in tomorrow’s final game at Middlesbrough.

He has taken over from the departed Matt Upson, keeping the experienced Aaron Hughes at bay, and made his 100th start for the club against Watford last Saturday.

Greer said: “He’s always had the ability and is a fantastic player. He’s just come of age.

“It’s not like he wasn’t doing something right or wrong before, everything has fallen into place for him.

“He’s done well and scored a lot of goals. Although it’s been a really disappointing season for the team, it’s been a good season for Dunky.”
