Today marks the third anniversary of the death of Sussex-based speedway star Lee Richardson.

The former Eastbourne Eagles captain never recovered from internal injuries suffered in a crash while racing in a Polish League fixture.

Richardson was a regular competitor in both the World Cup for teams and World Championship for individual riders.

A distinguished league career across Europe included a year as Eagles skipper in 2008.

During that time they beat Poole in the final to win the Elite League Knockout Cup, their last major honour.

Richardson was based in his home town of Hastings, where he lived with his wife Emma and their three children, throughout his professional career.

As his career developed he became arguably the most proficient rider in the league around the notoriously tight and testing circuit at Arlington Stadium.

He also stood out as a happy-go-lucky, friendly, helpful character.
