Sussex captain Ed Joyce made a rapid double century as Ireland dominated the first day of their ICC InterContinental Cup clash with the United Arab Emirates at Malahide.

On head coach John Bracewell's first match day in charge of the Ireland team, Joyce's 229 not out from 223 balls spurred Ireland to 420-3 at the close and entered the record books as the highest score by an Ireland player.

Joyce's innings contained 29 fours and three sixes, and was complemented by 146 from opener Paul Stirling, as the pair shared in a second-wicket stand of 231 runs.

In setting a new record, he passed Eoin Morgan's 209 not out. It was also Joyce's personal first class career best score, beating the 211 he made for Middlesex in 2006.
