Albion have been warned of a backlash from Bolton preventing their hopes of making club history.

The Seagulls have never opened a league season with a nine-match unbeaten run.

They will if they avoid defeat at Wanderers on Saturday but manager Chris Hughton says it will not be easy for his Championship leaders to set a new benchmark.

He expects Neil Lennon’s Bolton to respond to a 4-1 hammering at Huddersfield, which has left them hovering just above the relegation zone.

They are two points above rock-bottom Rotherham, who gave Albion a hard time at the Amex last week, as Hughton contemplates the likelihood of Uwe Huenemeier (hip), Sam Baldock (minor concussion) and Tomer Hemed (tight hamstring) all being available for the journey to Lancashire.

Hughton told The Argus: “We’ve probably had the first period where we’ve picked up a few injuries. Thankfully for us they are not big injuries and we don’t expect them to be out for a period of time.

“But the season will test us, every game. We’ve got a really tough game at Bolton, irrespective of form. We want to try to keep players as fit as we can.

“Everybody will react. Rotherham were bottom coming to the Amex. Although I felt the scoreline should have been bigger, they lose 2-1 and then they go and win against Cardiff.

“There are no easy games and I don’t see Bolton being any different.”

Albion’s previous best league starts of seven wins and a draw in 1953-54 and six wins and two draws – the same as Hughton’s side – in 1977-78 ended with defeats in their ninth match.

Season ticket holders can bring two friends for £10 each in the south, north and west lower corners of the Amex for the next home match against Cardiff City on October 3 if they book by 5pm this Friday.
