James Wilson has issued a ‘use me’ plea for Albion’s promotion crunch at Middlesbrough.

The striker on loan from Manchester United came off the bench in place of Sam Baldock to snatch a 1-1 draw against Derby at the Amex on Monday.

Now boss Chris Hughton must decide whether to stick Wilson back in the starting line-up or keep faith with Baldock for a match Albion must win to pip Boro for a place in the Premier League and avoid relying on the play-offs.

Wilson told The Argus: “I’ve staked a claim to the manager now. I’ve done my best in training and hopefully it’s enough to get a start and if not come on and definitely make a difference again.”

Wilson thinks the weight of expectation on Boro, needing only a point in front of their own fans, could work in Albion’s favour.

He said: “I spoke to Rosey (Liam Rosenior), who said he was in a similar situation at Reading. They needed a draw to go up and ended up losing 2-1 and you could tell around the whole ground they were nervous.

“It’s the balance between nervous and excited to go up to the Premier League, which is what we’re all going for. We go into the game on a good run and hopefully we can get a result.”

Left-back Rosenior, promoted with Hull three years ago, said: “I know Grant Leadbitter at Middlesbrough. What a lovely guy he is. He’s got a wonderful family.

“At the same time I would rather it’s me going up. We’re all in the same boat now.

“If anyone said you have to win your last game to go up you would be absolutely delighted. Middlesbrough are a good side but we are a good side as well. We’re really looking forward to it.”
