New signing Sebastien Pocognoli has revealed why he turned Albion down last season.

The Seagulls tried to borrow the Belgian international left-back last year but he decided to stay put at West Brom.

Pocognoli revealed to The Argus: “That was for the short-term and it was not the right moment to move for two or three months for private reasons.

“Also, I was expecting to fight for a place at West Brom. The club understood and I was very honest.

“Now my situation is totally different compared to then.”

Albion landed Pocognoli, 29, at the second time of asking for the rest of the season after he was limited to one substitute appearance in the Premier League at West Brom last season.

He said: “It was really difficult. I didn’t enjoy it for the last 18 months but I’ve had my family around me and I’ve worked very hard, sometimes alone and on days off. I have always tried to stay positive and I’m very happy to be here.”

Pocognoli will be in contention for his debut when Albion return to Championship action following the international break.
